Saving Members Money on Prescriptions Through Generic Drug Utilization

ORLANDO, FL--(Marketwire - January 11, 2011) - The DEA, supporting the New York City Police Department, is proactive in their approach to Health Care Benefits. Educating members and effectively communicating how to maintain quality prescription benefits while managing cost is a goal the DEA has achieved with the assistance of BeneCard PBF.

Michael J. Palladino, President of the DEA, said, "BeneCard has enabled the DEA to provide superb care to our members and at the same time maintain fiscal stability to our Health Benefits Funds during such challenging economic times."

In April 2010, on behalf of the DEA, BeneCard PBF produced clinical cost management letters to patients who were obtaining a brand name drug when there was a lower cost, therapeutically equivalent drug available.

This customized mailing reached 7,502 patients. The results, in less than 4 months, have been remarkable. As of July 31, 2010, DEA members have saved $90,907.63 in copays and the DEA Benefit Fund has saved $153,464.47 in prescription benefit costs. So far, there has been a conversion rate of 16.53% whereby patients have changed to a generic or lower cost, therapeutically equivalent product.

"BeneCard PBF is proud to be able to offer and assist the DEA in cost containment programs that educate the members, keep them healthy and manage costs," says Executive Vice President and General Manager, Michael Perry. "Our mission is to improve patient health by aligning the mutual interests of payers, pharmacies and providers," says Perry.

BeneCard PBF, a division of BeneCard Services, Inc., is based in Orlando, Florida, with offices in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. BeneCard PBF combines a 20-year history of administering fixed rate prescription benefit programs with a management team of pharmacists and industry experts who focus on self-funded prescription benefit program administration.
