Berkeley Research Group Teams With 3M to Help Health Systems Enhance Clinical Efficiency and Quality

Joint Offering Will Support Provider Participation in Medicare Bundled Payment Initiative

EMERYVILLE, CA--(Marketwire - Dec 5, 2011) - Berkeley Research Group's Health Analytics Practice and 3M Health Information Systems announced today that they will support academic medical centers and health systems with consulting services and software focused on clinical transformation, leveraging BRG's expertise in clinical economics and 3M's expertise in clinical classification.

BRG will conduct pilot consulting engagements at select organizations, focusing on improving quality of care and efficiency using 3M Potentially Preventable Complications Software (3M PPCs) and 3M Potentially Preventable Readmissions Software (3M PPRs), advanced patient classification systems that identify process and performance issues which can lead to avoidable post-admission complications or increased risk of patient readmissions.

Additionally, the BRG team will focus on evaluating episodes of care and bundling payments under Medicare's bundled payment initiative, as well as all-payer episode bundling using the 3M APR-DRG Classification System, 3M Enhanced Ambulatory Patient Groups (3M EAPGs), 3M PPCs, 3M PPRs, and 3M Clinical Risk Groups, a risk adjustment tool. BRG and 3M will also help academic medical centers and health systems identify opportunities to reduce potentially avoidable utilization and costs for inpatient, emergency room, and ancillary services.

"BRG is excited to have this opportunity to work hand in hand with 3M. Historically, our team has been among the first to utilize 3M patient classification tools and we look forward to working together in helping academic medical centers, health systems, and health plans achieve performance improvement," said Michael Stitcher, BRG Health Analytics Practice director.

"We will be able to leverage 3M's classification expertise and risk adjustment methodologies to better inform our consulting engagements, which are working to transform some of the most forward-thinking academic medical centers in the nation," added BRG Health Analytics Practice director Donna Kinzer.

"Helping healthcare organizations succeed in an ever-changing reform and regulatory environment is a high priority for both the BRG team and 3M, as it has been throughout our long-standing relationship," said Sandeep Wadhwa, MD, Chief Medical Officer for 3M Health Information Systems. "Our combined resources will help facilities improve care efficiency, while identifying opportunities to promote patient health and safety."
