Best-in-Class Companies Deliver "Self-Service BI" Capabilities

Best-in-Class Companies Achieve 161% Greater Ability to Deliver "Self-Service BI Capabilities to End-Users" vs. Industry Average Peers

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - May 8, 2008) - Aberdeen, a Harte-Hanks Company (NYSE: HHS), revealed today that Best-in-Class (BIC) companies -- those performing in the top 20% of all research survey respondents -- have employed a mix of capabilities to achieve improved Business Intelligence (BI) deployment strategies, that include:

-- Improvement in user information access and support
-- Decreased cost of implementations and on-going maintenance and support
-- Improvement of time-to-completion of BI implementation projects
-- Extended reach of BI applications to all users when, how, and where
    they need it

According to research presented in a new report, "Business Intelligence Deployment Strategies," 80% of Best-in-Class companies have experienced an increase in enterprise-wide use of current BI deployments, versus 50% of Industry Average and 31% of Laggard companies. Historically, companies that have adopted BI solutions have struggled with expanding the use of the technology to non-technical end users. Best-in-Class companies have clearly uncovered the strategic and tactical capabilities to alleviate the pressure to improve user adoption and thereby achieve more rapid and higher ROI on BI investments.

"Traditional BI deployments have been characterized as consisting of long, complex implementations involving difficult data integration issues, costly software licenses, and user training requirements," said David Hatch, Research Director of Aberdeen's Business Intelligence Practice. "All three of these issues are reported as top inhibitors by respondents, and often push deployment projects beyond the time and skill-set boundaries of the organization. This has presented a problem for CIOs who must meet demand for the delivery of actionable information, but are constrained by budget, time, and skill set limitations."

Best-in-Class companies are utilizing a broad mix of deployment approaches to deliver BI capabilities to the enterprise. This includes traditional deployment approaches, such as on-premise client-server and web-server deployments, as well as investigating new deployment approaches such as SaaS BI, BI embedded within ERP and other enterprise applications, and "BI appliances" that combine hardware and software into a packaged solution. SaaS BI is the only deployment approach that is showing growth in interest over time. In July of 2007, Aberdeen research revealed that 11% of Best-in-Class BI applications were currently deployed via SaaS. The findings in the new study reveal that this number has grown to 15% in less than a year, and will continue to grow as 21% of Best-in-Class respondents have indicated that they are planning to take this approach for future deployments.
