Best-Selling Author Jane Hamilton to Speak and Sign Books

Hamilton, Author of Oprah Book Club Selection "Book of Ruth" and Best-Seller "Map of the World," Will Speak on November 12, 2009, as Part of the Rae Dorough Speakers Series; Special Dine & Discover Wisconsin Farm Dinner at Eddie Papa's Restaurant

LIVERMORE, CA--(Marketwire - October 26, 2009) - Best-selling author Jane Hamilton will speak and sign books on November 12, 2009, at 7:30pm at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore, California. Hamilton's appearance is part of the 2009-2010 Rae Dorough Speakers Series. Writing about her work, the San Francisco Chronicle said, "Jane Hamilton has removed all doubts that she belongs among the major writers of our time."

Hamilton's first novel, "The Book of Ruth," was published in 1988 and won the PEN/Ernest Hemingway Foundation Award for best first novel, was a selection of the Oprah Book Club and the basis for a 2004 television film of the same title.

Hamilton is a witty and insightful speaker, with a deep background in literature and a profound understanding of contemporary society. Her presentation, Slouching Toward Television, will address her brush with Los Angeles, writing for television, the future of the novel and the amusing circumstances that led to her most recent novel, "Laura Rider's Masterpiece." She lives, works, and writes in an orchard farmhouse in Wisconsin. Following her talk, Hamilton will take questions and be available during a post-performance reception to sign books greet members of the audience.

"Jane Hamilton is a real favorite here in Livermore, with readers of all ages," said Susan Mayall, former owner of Goodenough Books and a member of the Rae Dorough Speakers Series committee. "And not many people know that Livermore helped to launch her on her career," she added. "When I was owner of Goodenough Books I read an advance copy of 'The Book of Ruth.' My manager and I liked it so much that we asked the publisher if Jane could speak, but were told that the book was 'dead' and that the publisher wouldn't cover the costs. We invited her anyway, and week before the event Jane won the PEN/ Hemingway award, and the publisher covered her trip. Jane flew out right after the award ceremony in New York -- and she's returned to Livermore after each of her subsequent novels."

Tickets are $30, $12 for students 21 and under and are available by calling 925-373-6800 or visiting

The final two speakers in the 2009-2010 Rae Dorough Speakers Series will be American astrophysicist and UC Berkeley professor Alex Filippenko, and artistic director of A.C.T. (American Conservatory Theatre) Carey Perloff. Fillipenko will present Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe on January 28, 2010, and Carey Perloff will present From Archaeology to Artistic Director: a Career in the American Theatre on March 18, 2010.
