Best-Selling Writer Kate Sprouse Launches "Friendfunding" Campaign for Half Price Cosmos Production

Big-Stage Debut Is Set to Open in Chicago During the Summer of 2014

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - Mar 13, 2014) -  Kate Sprouse, the best-selling writer, blogger and playwright, announced today the launch of a new campaign to fund the debut of her on-stage play entitled Half Price Cosmos. The campaign launched on Rockethub, a funding platform for creative projects, and enables people to pledge money to help support certain aspects of the play's production in order to reach the project's goal. More information can be found here.

Half Price Cosmos is the story of eight everyday strangers who share one night in a bar. On a normal night, these strangers would keep to themselves and their private conversations, but on this one night these people -- all with very different backgrounds and beliefs - fall into a heated conversation about everything that is not supposed to be discussed in a bar as they learn the unfolding details of a possible terrorist attack in an American city. The physical distance from the violent event and the relative anonymity amongst these bar strangers provides the perfect recipe for brutal honesty and revealed prejudice. In the end, this is not a story about how to resolve conflict, but how to live with conflict -- in life and in conversations -- honestly and openly.

"I am thrilled and excited at the outpouring of support and interest I've received for the play so far," says Kate Sprouse. "This script has been a labor of love for me for many years. I'm eager to raise some of the important issues that I've long thought are a part of our daily lives, but too often get pushed under the rug. This is an important, thought-provoking story that in my opinion needs to be told on-stage, as it speaks to our biases, relationships and societal topics that are too often off-limits."

The play is scheduled to run at the Athenaeum Theater in Chicago from July 24, 2014 through August 24, 2014. Through the "Friendfunding" campaign, the full production budget including unionized compensation for actors, director and stage crew; sets, lighting, sound and costume design; and a small budget for ticketing, rehearsal, casting and marketing will be funded.

"I originally wrote this play as a one act, fifteen years ago, when I was in a local theater troupe at the University of Virginia," said Sprouse. "The play was all about showing how two people's perspectives of the same night in the same bar about the same national event could vary so dramatically. I turned the one act into a full-length play a year ago, in hopes of inspiring difficult conversation about the most damaging prejudices that live quietly amongst us, unprovoked and unquestioned until tragedy strikes."

The Rockethub campaign will be live and accepting pledges through April 25, 2014. As of press date, the project is ahead of schedule in terms of funding and show reservations are filling up.
