LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 14, 2012) - There are approximately 78.2M owned dogs in the United States, and in observance of National Dog Day on August 26, 2012, acclaimed animal memoir author Monica Holloway, of Cowboy & Wills, is holding a pet short story competition on her Facebook page ( where the poster of their animal tribute of 200 words or less will receive a gift basket featuring a signed book by Holloway along with a hearty helping of doggie treats for their pet.

National Dog Day encourages pet parents to show appreciation for their dog's loyalty, love, patience and ability to positively impact lives. The observance also recognizes the need for adoption of shelter dogs, and has helped to save the lives of over 1M dogs since its inception in 2004.

Holloway knows the significance of the incredible connection shared between owners and their dogs, as described in Cowboy & Wills, a story of the puppy who changed Holloway's disabled son's life by becoming his first friend.

"Companionship, love and affection are just some of the tremendous benefits my dogs have provided to my family," says Holloway. "Our late dog Cowboy was a salvation to me and helped my son with autism to connect with the world. She gave us hope, and taught us about devotion, loyalty, and never giving up. I hope all dog owners show their appreciation for their furry friends on National Dog Day and everyday."
