Betting on life in outer space

OSLO, NORWAY--(Marketwire - October 15, 2010) - The Nordic bookmaker Betsson offers odds on most things, and now bets can also be placed on the existence of non-human life forms in outer space. Following recent media reports that researcher have discovered a new habitable planet, the odds of NASA confirming the discovery of new life forms in outer space by 2016 are falling sharply.

In our own solar system, only the earth is habitable. On Thursday 30 September, researchers from the University of California in Santa Cruz and Carnegie Mellon University in Washingon reported the good news that, after a search lasting 11 years, they had found a habitable planet in outer space. According to the researchers, the planet, which has been named Gliese 581g, is located in the "Goldilocks Zone", a term used to describe the habitable zone around a star. Several of the researchers believe that the probability of life existing on Gliese 581g is almost 100%.

"This is the first time that researchers have found a planet with the right composition and located at the right distance to have flowing water and a proper atmosphere, and we are therefore unwilling to risk offering odds greater than 25:1 on humans still being alone in outer space in five years' time," says Thomas Aakvik, Betsson Norway Country Manager.

Specifically, the bet is whether NASA will confirm, by 1 January 2016, that it has found life forms on planets other than the earth and Mars. If NASA confirms such a find, players will receive a payout of 25 times their stake. However, Betsson believes it to be more likely that we will remain alone, and is therefore offering odds of 1.01:1 on humankind still being alone in outer space in five years' time.

Will NASA confirm that it has found life forms on planets other than the earth and Mars by 1 January 2016?

Yes: 25:1

No: 1.01:1
