Beverly Winterscheid Announces the Creation of the Institute for Nature & Leadership

WASHINGTON DC--(Marketwire - Jun 12, 2012) - Beverly Winterscheid, Ph.D., announced the launch of The Institute for Nature and Leadership (INL) in Washington, DC, at a gathering of its Advisory Board. INL was formed to jumpstart innovative leadership practice along with courageous stewardship for a world that needs our collective best efforts at this time.

"The breakdown of leadership that is occurring throughout our country and within many areas of our society led me and my fellow advisors to found INL," said Winterscheid. "We can't solve a problem with the same level of consciousness that created it, as Einstein noted."

The focus of INL is to create a community of change agents and promote nature-based leadership (NBL), a new leadership consciousness, ethos, and set of practices.

"We learn from nature, our first and greatest teacher," noted Winterscheid. "The natural world can open humans up to the highest aspects of their humanity and leadership, which, in turn, can serve the world in very new and powerful ways."

Nature-based leadership (NBL) combines streams of modern and historical work. This includes leadership competency development, ecopsychology, and mindfulness. NBL also uses direct sensory immersion in the natural world to cultivate intellect, imagination and intuition.

INL will create a network of social entrepreneurs and change agents across the sectors of business, NGOs, government and education. Its online community and national programming will provide dialogue, educational resources, and peer-to-peer mentoring.

INL will also partner with organizations launching sustainability initiatives to track the effects of nature-based leadership on an organization's results. INL is actively seeking organizational partners for these research initiatives.

"Among other things, INL seeks to guide people to find those deep connections between Self and Earth," notes Board Member Cary Gaunt, an environmental consultant in Vermont. "We help people transform those deep creative connections in service to the work that they find important in the world today."

INL has a unique, cross-generational approach focus, explicitly targeting both Baby-boomers, who are looking for their encore careers, and the Gen X/Millennials, who frequently reject historical concepts of work and career.

After a successful corporate career, Winterscheid, who cares deeply about creating new responses to stewardship of self, organization and place resulting in shifts of awareness and action, became a founding faculty member of the Marlboro MBA in Managing for Sustainability, and is its Leadership Development Professor. She was a founding Board member of the Sustainable Business Network of Washington, DC, a member of the Corporate Development Task Force of the Cleveland World Trade Center and is currently on the Board of Sheep Mountain Alliance, an environmental organization in Telluride, Colorado.

INL's Board includes women corporate executives and social entrepreneurs: Darcy Winslow, Managing Partner of the Academy for Systemic Change and formerly of Nike; Nicole Hade, sustainability leader at Hamilton Sundstrand in Connecticut; Cary Gaunt, Ph.D., an environmental consultant in Vermont; and Jen Burkhardt, Chief Community Architect/Founder of Bootstrap Social Media and Director of Transportation and Logistics at

The Institute for Nature and Leadership (INL) is an educational non-profit 501(c) 3 organization based in Washington DC.
