Beware of Generous Credit Card Offers, Warns

Credit Card Companies Offering Increasingly Generous 0% Balance Transfer Rates That Last up to 18 Months May Not Be as Generous as They Seem

STAMFORD, CT--(Marketwire - May 18, 2010) - Although some major credit cards are now advertising 0% interest rates for up to 18 months on balance transfers and purchases, things aren't always what they seem, warns, a website that allows visitors to find the best credit card balance transfer offers.

"The CARD Act has given many people the impression that credit card companies are all out of dirty tricks. Unfortunately, this simply isn't the case," said Jeffrey Weber, President and CEO of Smart Balance Transfers. "It is just as important today as it was in the past to closely review the fine print of any credit card application."

While a 0% balance transfer for 18 months is a great deal, these credit card companies may only grant approved applicants 0% rates for 7 or 12 months based on a review of their application and credit history -- which are not the good deals most applicants think they will be receiving.

"People who are looking for the longest 0% balance transfer offers need to pay particularly close attention to the fine print," advises Weber. "To avoid rate shock, review credit card applications closely. If you are intending to do a balance transfer, apply online and wait for your card to arrive in the mail so you can make sure the 0% length and long term APR are good before transferring balances and paying fees."
