Big Rock's Grasshopper Wheat Ale Continues to Be A Winner

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 13, 2011) - Big Rock Brewery Inc. (TSX:BR): Big Rock Brewery's Grasshopper Wheat Ale has earned another national accolade, this time at the 2011 Canadian Brewing Awards. Grasshopper took home the silver medal in the "North American Style – Wheat Beer" category at the gala awards ceremony in Toronto on Friday September 9th. This is Grasshopper's third national medal in the last five years.

"We're very excited about this most recent distinction," said Bill McKenzie, President of Big Rock Brewery. "It just proves that Grasshopper is a consistent winner in this category and that it continues to be favoured by beer drinkers, and experts alike."

Grasshopper has been a part of Big Rock's regular line-up of beers since 1994, and has become one of the brewery's flagship brands. The company's founder, Ed McNally, realized early on that Alberta was home to some of the best wheat in the world, and it wasn't long before Big Rock's first wheat beer was created. The result was an ale so crisp and delicious that it quickly attracted mass attention and demand that hasn't lingered.

"When Grasshopper was first created, there weren't a lot of wheat beers to chose from," said Big Rock's Brewmaster Paul Gautreau, "but now that style of beer has really expanded, and we'd like to think that the success of Grasshopper has played a big role in the category's appeal."

Two years after Grasshopper hit the market, the National Post awarded it Canada's "Best Patio Beer" in 1996. A year later it took home the Gold medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards and in 2009 it finished first place again at the national competition. The Canadian Brewing Awards have become the premiere event for judging Canadian brewed beer with over 37 style categories this year and hundreds of breweries of all sizes entered from across the country.
