Big Switch Networks to Keynote at the North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG)

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - Oct 7, 2011) - Big Switch Networks, an OpenFlow company bringing the benefits of virtualization and cloud architecture to enterprise networks, today announced that Rob Sherwood is giving a keynote address titled "OpenFlow: What is it and where is it going?" on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in Philadelphia, PA at NANOG. NANOG is an educational and operational forum for the coordination and dissemination of technical information related to backbone/enterprise networking technologies and operational practices.

In his keynote, Sherwood will go into technical detail on what OpenFlow is, give an overview of the emerging software-defined networking ecosystem and share forward-thinking thoughts on the impact OpenFlow can have on the networking industry as a whole.

"I think of the NANOG crowd as the people who run the Internet," said Rob Sherwood, Member of Technical Staff at Big Switch Networks. "I'm pretty excited to get a chance to talk with them about OpenFlow and separate out the hype from the real substance."

Sherwood has worked in networking as an administrator, researcher and programmer for the last 15 years. He spent the last three years developing and evangelizing the emerging OpenFlow standard with a focus on network virtualization. His prototype OpenFlow-based network hypervisor, the "FlowVisor," allows production and experimental traffic to safely co-exist on the same physical network, and it is currently deployed in numerous R&E networks. His dissertation work on network measurement and security was done at University of Maryland.
