Bigelow Tea's "Support our Troops" Program Presents Local USO Chapter With a Check for $14,100

FAIRFIELD, CT--(Marketwired - November 10, 2016) - Bigelow Tea came together with the USO and Stop & Shop as a force behind the armed forces in Quincy, MA, recently and made a donation of $14,100 to support the USO's efforts in providing services to forward-deployed service members, military families, wounded warriors, troops in transition and families of the fallen.

The gift was the result of a Support our Local Troops Program that represents 3% of all Bigelow Tea sold at Stop & Shop stores between June 3 and July 7, 2016.

Bigelow began working with select retailers in 2015 to donate portions of Bigelow tea sales to USO centers serving local military communities. With more than 180 locations around the world, the USO has been connecting America's service members to family, home and country for 75 years.

"We recognize the huge sacrifices men and women of our military have made and continue to make, and the USO's mission is near and dear to the hearts of everyone at Bigelow Tea," said Cindi Bigelow, third-generation President & CEO of Bigelow Tea. "Filled with pride and gratitude for all they do, we love doing all we can, whenever we can, to support them. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Stop & Shop on this program and are grateful to all the Stop & Shop consumers for their whole-hearted support. Together we accomplish great things."

Bigelow Tea's commitment to U.S. military communities continues to grow since it launched its Tea for the Troops Program in 2009, donating 5 million tea bags to date in support of the USO's ongoing mission to strengthen America's military by keeping them connected to family, home and country. The Tea for the Troops program sends specially designed boxes of the company's 100% American-grown tea from the company's Charleston Tea Plantation to U.S. military personnel overseas and in the States. The package was created exclusively for service men and women to thank them for their service.

In addition, Bigelow Tea became an official sponsor of the USO in 2015 and an enthusiastic participant in USO events including the organization's 2015 and 2016 Warrior Weeks that took place in Virginia Beach, VA, in association with USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia Inc. Their programs bring together physical, therapeutic and recreational organizations that empower wounded, ill and injured veterans by providing opportunities to participate in activities from adaptive water skiing and kayaking, to deep sea fishing, horseback riding, surfing, racquetball and tennis.

"I want to thank Bigelow Tea for all it does both regionally and nationally to support our service men and women, and for its commitment to charitable interests, especially its support of the USO," said Tonia White, USO Senior Director of Development. "It is truly a testament to the company's supportive leadership and an example to other companies. Our collective work is a powerful expression of gratitude to the men and women who protect our nation. It means a great deal to our service members to know that America has their backs. Continue to TEA PROUDLY!"

About Bigelow Tea Company

Based in Fairfield, CT, and 100% family-owned, the Bigelow Tea Company pioneered the specialty tea category more than 70 years ago with its first creation, "Constant Comment"® Tea. Bigelow takes pride in its heritage and successful growth from a one-product, entrepreneurial venture into America's leading specialty tea company that produces 1.7 billion tea bags annually in more than 130 flavors.

In 2003, the company purchased and restored the Charleston Tea Plantation, an American tea plantation on Wadmalaw Island, just south of Charleston, SC, that cultivates hundreds of thousands of tea bushes that are descendants of ancestral Camellia sinensis bushes brought from China in 1888. The Charleston Tea Plantation has become a "must see" destination for more than 70,000 travelers from around the world who visit annually to learn how tea is grown and harvested, and sample products made from tea grown on the premises.
