BigFix Kicks Off System Administrator of the Year Nomination Process

On Your Marks, Get Set, Administrate!

EMERYVILLE, CA--(Marketwire - August 26, 2009) -

News Facts

-- BigFix, Inc., in conjunction with the League of Professional System Administrators (LOPSA), USENIX, and the Large Installation System Administration (LISA) 2009 Conference have opened the 2009 System Administrator of the Year (SAOTY) contest for nominations.

-- The contest's winner selection process takes into consideration factors such as service to user communities, sysadmin-championed process improvements, beyond-the-call-of-duty heroics, and contributions to the general knowledge pool.

-- Nomination information can be found at the SAOTY website, www.bigfix.com/rockstar.

-- A panel of expert judges, including Amrit Williams (blogger, http://techbuddha.wordpress.com), Robert Scoble (http://scobleizer.com), and Ryan Russell (author, "Stealing the Network") will select award winners from the pool of nominees. Contest organizers anticipate naming additional judges in the near future.

-- System administrators in the US and Canada are eligible to participate in the contest. Prizes and recognition will be awarded subject to any prevailing legal, professional ethics, or code of conduct restrictions such as those that might apply to government or non-profit employees.

-- Nominations are open between August 25 and October 23, with contest winner and runners up announced at the LISA '09 Conference in Baltimore, November 4, 2009.

Background and Context

-- Sysadmins are the unsung heroes of information technology, keeping computers up and running, defending infrastructures from malware and hacking attacks, and helping end-users maximize their productivity.

-- BigFix is sponsoring this year's contest because of the company's focus on providing products, technologies and expertise to help sysadmins perform super-human security and system management tasks faster, less expensively and more effectively than with conventional tools.

-- The contest is also an opportunity for the sysadmin community to share information on best practices and new ways to deliver value to their constituencies.

-- According to the US Department of Labor 2006 statistics, 862,000 people make their livings as sysadmins in the US.

Supporting Quotes

Amrit Williams, chair of the System Administrator of the Year judging panel, said: "In an increasingly computerized world, sysadmins supply the sweat, on-the-spot decision making, and end-user support to sustain the economic and social benefits generated by computing. But like many vital professions requiring hands-on skills, sysadmins are often overlooked as contributors to the IT value chain. By bringing attention to the outstanding contributions of the profession's rock stars, we celebrate all sysadmins and the value they make possible in our society."

Anne Dickison, Director of Marketing, The USENIX Association said: "USENIX is very excited that BigFix is bringing the System Administrator of the Year contest back to LISA. It's a fantastic opportunity to recognize the rocking efforts of a very deserving sysadmin."
