Bikers Should Choose the Right Clothing for Their Ride This Winter Advises Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 27, 2011) - Swinton Bikes is advising motorcyclists to choose the right form of protective clothing when taking their bikes for a ride this winter.

As Christmas draws closer, many motorcyclists will be wrapping up warm in preparation for the icy days ahead. However, Swinton Bikes, one of the UK's leading retailers of motorbike insurance, wants to remind riders that traditional leathers might not be suitable for the chilly conditions if they come off their bike.

The popular choices among riders often include leather jackets, chaps, and trousers. While these are usually made from cow or buffalo hide, which are both known for their strength and durability, wearing them in the winter months can prove dangerous when riding in ice and snow. Should the rider come off their bike, the leather can slip on the ice, causing the rider to skid excessively along the surface of the road.

There is an extensive range of motorcycle clothing available for those riders looking for leather alternatives, including jackets with ventilation, a choice of different linings, and different fittings for the winter months. Trousers are also available in a range of waterproof materials and come equipped with venting and removable linings.

Appropriate motorbike clothing is of the utmost importance, and should be tough and well fitting, so there is no danger of skin exposure should accidents happen.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes, said: "It's important that all bikers have the best possible bike insurance and equipment to guarantee their safety, regardless of their level of experience. The abundance of choice when it comes to protective garments means there's never an excuse for being unprepared. With winter weather on the way, riders should be taking extra special care of themselves, to prevent injuries that could blight their festivities."

Key items of protective equipment that should be worn include:

  • Armour placed at points that could be vulnerable during an accident, including shoulders, elbows, back, knees, and ankles

  • Visors or goggles

  • Jacket and trousers

  • Visibility aids
