Bill 190: The Association of Quebec Landlords (APQ) is Pleased That This Project Will Not Be Adopted and it Will Be on Guard for Any Such Project

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Sept. 16, 2014) - The Association of Quebec Landlords (APQ) is pleased to learn that Bill 190, an Act preventing eviction of tenants from December 1 to March 31 as well as the repossession of a housing when one of the occupants is a person of 65 years old or more will not be adopted.

"Québec Solidaire wanted to prevent a person aged 65 or over to reside in one of the dwellings of his/her children, close to them, to allow another elderly person to live there! Where is the logic and the protection of the rights of the ascendants in all of that!" says Martin Messier, president of the APQ.

"Moreover, the bill indicated that the limitations that one wishes to impose upon repossession of a dwelling of a person aged 65 and over would be from the moment an elderly person has been occupying the unit, whether he/she be a tenant or not," adds Mr. Messier. The APQ believes that the drafting of the bill indicated a misunderstanding of the rental law and is happy that one did not follow up on it.

The Association of Quebec Landlords (APQ), which defends the owners of rental housing against this bill which offended owners' rights, notes that the Parti Québécois also wants to file a bill affecting the rental sphere.

"We will continue to monitor and claim all the bills surrounding the rental world, as we promised a few months ago. The owners of revenue-generating housing are already exasperated by the current rental law and its application, and the protection offered to tenants, which turns the door wide open to abuse. One must stop removing the rights of property owners before they do eventually go out of business," concludes Martin Messier.

Founded in 1984, the Association of Quebec Landlords (APQ) is the most important association providing services to owners of rental housing in all regions of Quebec. It also provides an evaluation service on tenants which is unique in Quebec.
