BIOLASE Receives New Patent for Oral Care Technologies

Bolsters Intellectual Property in Target Consumer Markets

IRVINE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- December 20, 2006 -- BIOLASE Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: BLTI), the world's leading dental laser company, announced today that it has been granted a new U.S. patent related to its oral care technologies, with claims covering electromagnetic energy devices for therapeutic and cosmetic use.

President and CEO Jeffrey W. Jones said that this new patent strengthens the Company's protection for certain consumer products either under consideration or already in development.

"Our recently announced relationship with Procter & Gamble underscores our intent to enter certain consumer market segments with products based upon our core technologies," added Jones. "The strategic intellectual property foundation is critical for successful product planning. We believe BIOLASE has a strong position for future product development in consumer products. We intend to be aggressive and proactive in defending our inventions."

The patent, No. 7,144,249 B2, granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, contains both device and method claims related to the utilization of bands, tape or mouthpieces in oral applications. Most of the claims involve the use of electromagnetic energy (light or photons from LEDs or other sources). The devices include pre-filled compartments of gel/dentifrice that apply to teeth for various cosmetic and therapeutic uses. The claims are not limited to dental devices with internal electromagnetic (light) energy sources, so external electromagnetic (light) energy sources are also covered. In some claims the pre-filled dental tape/band contains one or more agents for desensitizing, etching, whitening, cleaning, sterilizing, anti-caries, anti-bacterial, anti-tartar, anti-plaque, etc.

The patent contains 96 claims, of which seven are independent. Overall, this patent provides broad coverage for professional and consumer oral care products and methods that relate to dental devices such as dental tape, bands or mouthpieces, using electromagnetic energy, with or without therapeutic and/or cosmetic agents.
