HIV transmission in Latin America can be attributed to several factors, common to all Latin American countries, including widespread poverty and migration, insufficient information and education. Two thirds of the estimated 1.7 million people living with HIV in Latin America reside in the four largest countries: Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia.

Brazil is the epicentre of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South America with an estimated 620,000 people (0.5% prevalence) living with HIV at the end of 2005. This represents roughly one third of all people living with the virus in Latin America. Within Argentina recent statistics estimate there are approximately 130,000 people living with HIV/AIDS (0.6% prevalence). Chile has an HIV infection rate roughly equal to that of Canada (0.3%) with approximately 28,000 people there living with HIV/AIDS.

Montana companies and groups involved in the mission include MSE Technology Applications, Globalization Partners International, Corporate Air, TowHaul/Smith Equipment, Evergreen International Inc., Corvallis Feed and Seed/Commercial Machine Services, Wood's Powr-Grip, TSI Health Sciences, the Montana Environmental and Engineering Consortium, the Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, UM's Legal Counsel and the Montana Export Assistance Center.
