BioProducts Canada/BIOTECanada: Strengthening Canadian Global Opportunity

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 20, 2006) - The Board of Directors of BioProducts Canada, a not-for-profit corporation, announced today its recent decision to merge the operations of BioProducts Canada into BIOTECanada, the national biotechnology association. Building on the respective base of both organizations, this will help to position Canadian leadership in the bio-based global economy. "This partnership of our two organizations is a natural one for us as we look to build on the international recognition already accorded to the potential of the Canadian bio-industrial sector. As our technologies converge, so must our policy and membership activities to better reflect the growing dynamic of the bio-economy and its potential for Canada. Our regional members from across Canada will enjoy a higher level of service as a result of the merger" said Rick Smith, Chairman of BioProducts Canada.

"We are seeing an unprecedented level of engagement in industry-based practices and applications for biotechnology that are replacing traditional manufacturing, pharmaceutical and energy production. Canada is viewed as a leader in this area thanks to our abundant natural resources and the quality of our scientific excellence" offered Rainer Engelhardt, Chair of BIOTECanada.

Canada has the second largest industrial biotechnology community in the world. Bioproducts and renewable biomass resources are expected to account for $100 billion of Canada's GDP by 2020. A bio based economy enhances rural and general economic growth through the development and transfer of new technologies, leading to a cleaner environment and a higher standard of living for Canadians. Securing Canada into the forefront of world economies as they shift towards sustainable renewable resources is a goal of both organizations.

BioProducts Canada has been focused on identifying market opportunities for bio industrial products as well as bringing together the science and technology, people and infrastructure needed to commercialize them in Canada for global markets.

BIOTECanada is the leading not-for-profit, industry-funded association dedicated to the sustainable commercial development of all sectors of biotechnology across Canada. BIOTECanada works with related regional, national and international groups to further Canada's contributions to the bio-economy, and welcomes the addition of BioProducts Canada responsibilities to its portfolio.
