Although a small portion of total energy was used, global wind power generation quadrupled between 2000 & 2006. Because wind is notoriously inconsistent and intermittent it is not as reliable as some other forms of clean energy. Commercial wind farms are beginning to show up in the U.S., Germany, Denmark, India, and Spain. The wind farm near Crowley, Alberta is Canada's first commercial wind farm; it was built there because the region is known for its strong, steady winds. In some rural area the cost of highly efficient wind turbines rival that of putting in electricity poles, power lines and other equipment and many homeowners are choosing to go this route.

In New York the state officials are worried about birds and bats. Guidelines were released Thursday by the Department of Environmental Conservation which promotes wind power and minimizes the danger to birds and bats. New York operates six wind farms with five more under construction. There are thirty more in the planning stages and state officials developed the guidelines to help determine how the impact bird and bat populations are determined by energy developers.

In the U.K., Brits can expect home electricity bills to rise 15% in order for Britain to meet its compulsory climate change targets. Britain's 15% target, while below the 20$ average for the European Union's 27 members, requires the greatest level of change making it the toughest in Europe. Maria McCaffery, Chief Executive of the Wind Energy Association, said "Britain could be a world leader in renewable energy if we have the will to make this vision a reality."

Let the four winds blow.

Ampex Corporation (NASDAQ: AMPX) was up $0.799 to $2.53, a gain of 46.20% on trading volumes of 60,317. The company is now trading just above its 52 week low of $1.39 -- a far cry from its high of $21.91. Financial troubles with Hillside continue to plague Ampex. In its release of January 18th, the company announced the termination of its Amended Standstill Agreement with Hillside Capital Inc.

NVE Corporation (NASDAQ: NVEC) was trading mid-day Tuesday at $25.99 up $5.731 or 28.29% on trading volumes of 364,287. The afternoon trading puts the stock nicely in the middle of its 52 week high and low of $41.95 and $19.50 respectively. NVE was involved in the pioneering of a nanotechnology known as Spintronics. Spintronics uses electron spin instead of electron charge to acquire, store and transmit. Powerful electromagnets are used by the manufacturing equipment by NVE to set electron spin. One transmitter uses up to 150 Amperes, more than the entire service to many homes.

Trintech Group PLC ADS (NASDAQ: TTPA) saw prices of $2.29 in late day trading Thursday, up $0.26 (12.81%) on a volume of 600, slightly higher than the 52 week low of $2.00. I-TRACS 5.5, Trintech's tracking, research, adjustment, and collection application for commercial, financial and healthcare markets, was released in Dallas, Texas and Dublin, Ireland on January 7, 2008. The new version extends existing capabilities giving improved item processing, increased efficiency and enhanced security. The I-TRACS system is used by major banks and savings institution in the U.S. and Canada.

Stock markets are normally volatile, but investors have enjoyed a four-year run of below normal volatility and steady upward movement. Ups and downs, yes. But the Bull Run has been great over the past three to four years and has not ended as abruptly as many have predicted.

We've seen oil markets spike, we've seen oil markets fall. We've seen wars, we've seen terrorist attacks. Chances are that the events that occur have a short term impact when you consider the overall factors of a 5-year forecast. We need to learn to take advantage of these economic factors. Think of homeland security.

Most investors -- and unfortunately far too many brokers -- go on a buying spree the minute a rally starts in a particular sector. Correspondingly, they panic at the first sign of a downturn and tend to sell off some great stocks -- right before the dead cat bounces.

But Maybach isn't about day-trading and making money fast. It's about being patient and learning the secret of how to get rich slowly. It's also about adding stocks to your portfolio that have little or no effect against the state of the economy.
