Blue Belt Technologies & Acibadem Healthcare Group Announces Formation of World-Class Orthopaedic Surgical Robotics Center and the First Clinical Navio Case Using the Smith & Nephew Journey Uni-Compartmental Knee System

ISTANBUL, TURKEY--(Marketwired - August 03, 2015) - Acibadem Healthcare Group, the leading healthcare services provider in Turkey, and Blue Belt Technologies announces the formation of an Orthopedic Surgical Robotics program as a leading global partner under Blue Belt Technologies' Center of Excellence program. Acibadem Healthcare Group has acquired two Navio® Surgical Systems for establishing both a clinical use program in its hospital group, as well as a world-class orthopedic robotics training and education offering as part of the Acibadem University CASE (Center for Advanced Simulation and Education) facility. The first clinical Navio case was performed by Dr. Alper Kaya at Acibadem Kadiköy Hospital on July 22. Blue Belt's Navio®system represents the next-generation in robotics-assisted orthopedics, having launched into the marketplace in Europe (July, 2012) and in the United States (March, 2013).

Using the Navio technology, to implant Smith & Nephew Journey Uni-compartmental Knee System, Dr. Kaya of Acibadem Kadiköy Hospital was able to offer robotics-assisted partial knee replacement surgery as an alternative to traditional total knee replacement surgery. The Navio system allowed Dr. Kaya to intra-operatively create a patient-specific surgical plan that precisely localizes the implant components and balanced the patients' soft tissue ligaments. He then utilized a hand held robotics-assisted instrument to accurately resurface the diseased bone to accept the partial knee replacement components.

Patients suffering from early to mid-stage osteoarthritis may benefit from partial knee replacement surgery which, as an alternative to total knee replacement, may deliver patients from surgery with less pain, shorter post-operative recovery periods, smaller incisions, and with their original cruciate ligaments intact.
