Blue Coat Positioned in Leaders Quadrant of Secure Web Gateway Magic Quadrant

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 6, 2012) - Blue Coat Systems, Inc., the technology leader in Web security and WAN optimization solutions, today announced it has been positioned in the Leaders Quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Secure Web Gateway by research and advisory firm Gartner, Inc.1 Blue Coat serves the Secure Web Gateway market with Unified Security solutions, combining Global Threat Defense, Universal Policy and Unified Reporting seamlessly across its Blue Coat® ProxySG® appliances and its cloud-based Blue Coat Security Service.

Blue Coat provides proactive, intelligent security for any user on any device in any location in a unique way that can protect against malicious attacks even before they are mounted by cybercriminals.

"We are proud to be positioned in the Leaders Quadrant of the Secure Web Gateway Magic Quadrant by Gartner and see this as a great reflection of our continued leadership in security," said Steve Daheb, chief marketing officer and senior vice president, Blue Coat Systems. "Blue Coat leads Web security with Unified Security solutions that are now imperative for protecting companies against increasingly devastating Web threats. At the same time, our unique Unified Security safely enables companies to embrace mobility and bring your own device initiatives."

In the report, Gartner describes the characteristics of Leaders in the Magic Quadrant. "Leaders are high-momentum vendors (based on sales and 'mind share' growth) with established track records in Web gateway security, as well as vision and business investments indicating that they are well-positioned for the future. Leaders do not necessarily offer the best products and services for every customer project; however, they provide solutions that offer relatively lower risk."

The adoption of bring your own device initiatives, cloud-based applications and social networking within the enterprise are eliminating traditional security boundaries and fundamentally changing how businesses need to secure their networks. The Blue Coat Unified Security solution enables the extended enterprise to expand its secure perimeter to all users on devices across the network by delivering Global Threat Defense, Universal Policy and Unified Reporting across its Blue Coat® ProxySG® appliances and its Internet-based Blue Coat Cloud Service. The Unified Security solution is the only one in the industry that leverages the same protection and control infrastructures across both appliances and the cloud, enabling enterprises to seamlessly extended policies to all users, regardless of location.

Against this backdrop of change, web threats continue to increase in number and sophistication. According to the Blue Coat 2012 Web Security Report, companies face an average of 5,000 Web threats each month. The Blue Coat Unified Security solution is powered by the Blue Coat WebPulse™ collaborative defense. Utilizing real-time requests and advanced analysis, WebPulse has comprehensive visibility into Web and malnet (malware network) ecosystems. Currently, Blue Coat is tracking more than 500 malnets, enabling WebPulse to provide a Negative Day Defense that can block attacks -- such as those launched through search engine results, social media, email and malvertising -- at their source before they launch.

In a recent market share report2 from Gartner, Blue Coat had achieved more than 44 percent of the worldwide Secure Web Gateway market in 2011 based on revenue, surpassing its closest competitor by more than 30 percentage points. With 85 percent of FORTUNE Global 500 companies as customers, Blue Coat Unified Security solutions continue to set the standard for protecting enterprises.

Blue Coat continues to deliver innovation and drive a new class of security solution to enterprises battling security and business operational risks created by shadow IT systems, applications moving to the cloud and the explosive adoption of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiatives. In addition, the growing sophistication of malware and advanced persistent threats, create the need for new types of security systems that protect the enterprise, as a highly mobile workforce demands anytime and anywhere access to corporate applications and data. Blue Coat is committed to redefine the way enterprises protect their systems, data and people.
