Blue Jay Consulting Enabled the Emergency Department at Capital Regional Medical Center to Deliver Outstanding Service to Patients in 10 Minutes or Less

World class Emergency Department consulting firm, Blue Jay Consulting, LLC, enabled Capital Regional Medical Center in Tallahassee, Florida to decrease Emergency Department patient wait times to ten minutes or less. In addition the team of experts improved patient throughput, decreased the amount of "left without being seen" patients, and enhanced patient satisfaction scores.

In pursuit of this 198-bed hospital's commitment to improve the quality of healthcare in its community, the management team recognized the need to enhance its Emergency Department and charted Blue Jay Consulting with that task.

Seeing over 50,000 patients a year, the hospital had high lengths of stay, hold times and walk out rates. The goal was to focus on throughput by getting patients to an ED bed, discharging patients or moving them upstairs to a room in a more timely fashion. Communications, work flow, and education issues stood in the way.

Meetings with staff and the ED Nursing and Medical Directors, along with observations of processes, provided Blue Jay Consulting with the information to move forward. Based on these findings, Blue Jay determined the strategy that needed to be implemented.

A steering committee was formed made up of staff from the ED to determine what needed to be changed. This provided the hospital with ownership of the project from the beginning.

Blue Jay Consulting, working with the steering committee, implemented processes to improve communications, streamline triage and realign staffing to more effectively move patients through -- avoiding congestion in the ED waiting area. Additionally, to improve flow, the role of facilitator was created to move patients more quickly through the department. The team succeeded and was able to lower the walk out rate from 3.6% to 0.7%. With the national standard less than two percent, this is a tremendous improvement.

Financially, the organization will realize an increase in annualized revenue as a result of capturing these visits. This increase does not include the additional contribution margin from laboratory testing, radiology exams or from an increase in admissions.
