Blue Ridge Passage Resort, Historic Cockram Mill to Sell in Virginia Absolute Land Auction

LAUREL FORK, VA--(Marketwire - September 23, 2010) -  The 126-acre Blue Ridge Passage Resort on the Dan River in Meadows of Dan -- including the historic Cockram Mill -- will sell at auction Saturday, Oct. 23, with Woltz & Associates managing the sale.

The property -- located 1.5 miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway and within five minutes of Mabry Mill and Chateau Morrisette -- also includes a restaurant, gift shop, chapel and other improvements. The 15 unimproved tracts have home sites with either long views of the Blue Ridge Mountains or privacy in the woods. Also selling will be a carousel with 19 antique horses, the Dan River Queen riverboat and other items. The 126 acres will sell in 20 tracts, with development rights to build 26 cabins selling separately.

"Everything is selling at absolute auction, with no reserves. So there will be opportunities for some people to get a great deal on some excellent property and facilities," said Jim Woltz, president of the auction company.

Cockram Mill, built around 1885, was powered by the headwaters of the Dan River. "This mill, which was extensively restored in 1984 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, was very unusual in that it used two turbine wheels rather than the usual overshot wheel. It used water power to grind grain, saw lumber and generate electricity. All the machinery in the mill is in place, making it an exceptional attraction and place to demonstrate some technology that was advanced for its day," said Woltz.

The chapel, located in a private area beside a large pond, was once the home and private chapel of Miss Flora Beatrice Farnham, a well-known artist and philanthropist who died in 1979.

"This sale offers an opportunity for someone wanting to buy a resort that has amenities in place, those interested in creating a retreat center, or individuals desiring to build a home in the mountains," said Woltz.
