BlueData Introduces EPIC 2.0 for Enterprise Deployments of Hadoop and Spark on Docker Containers

New Software Release Further Simplifies Big Data Infrastructure, Expands Support for New Spark Innovations, and Enhances Big Data App Store

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 23, 2015) - BlueData, provider of the leading infrastructure software platform for Big Data, today announced version 2.0 of its BlueData EPIC software platform. BlueData EPIC 2.0 provides a turnkey, purpose-built Big Data infrastructure solution for enterprises that can accelerate deployment times by up to 100X. This new fall release leverages Docker containers to simplify Big Data clusters, supports Apache Zeppelin notebooks and other new functionality for Apache Spark, and includes an enhanced App Store that provides one-click access to Big Data distributions and analytics tools.

Infrastructure complexity is a major barrier to Big Data adoption. BlueData's software innovations continue to make it easier to deploy multi-tenant Big Data infrastructure on-premises. With this new release, BlueData provides Docker support in the enterprise edition of the EPIC software platform for production deployments. This enables enterprises to quickly and easily deploy Hadoop or Spark in a lightweight container environment. With BlueData EPIC 2.0, on-premises Big Data deployments that may have taken several months can now be completed within a couple days.

This summer, BlueData announced initial Docker support in the free version of its software; this support is now extended to the enterprise edition of BlueData EPIC. This new release provides additional deployment flexibility for BlueData's enterprise customers, who can now run a containerized Big Data environment on either bare-metal physical servers or on virtual machines. The use of containers for Hadoop and Spark cluster nodes is completely transparent to the end users of BlueData, but they benefit from greater performance and flexibility due to the lightweight nature and close coupling of containers with the host operating system.

BlueData EPIC 2.0 also provides greater integration and support for new Spark innovations, including Apache Zeppelin for data exploration and visualization. By enabling self-service Spark clusters pre-integrated with web-based Zeppelin notebooks, EPIC can accelerate Spark data analysis for business analysts that may have less technical expertise than traditional data scientists. In addition, EPIC 2.0 introduces support for SparkR, Spark Streaming, MLlib and Spark Streaming-SQL. With BlueData EPIC, enterprises can simplify and accelerate their deployment of Spark on-premises -- either with Hadoop or in standalone mode, independent of Hadoop.

"The need to simplify deployments remains a major obstacle that must be resolved for enterprises adopting Big Data analytics," said Tony Baer, principal analyst, Ovum. "Some organizations have adopted Hadoop-as-a-Service or Spark-as-a-Service in the cloud to avoid the complexity and costs of deploying the necessary cluster infrastructure. With this release, BlueData allows organizations to take advantage of the simplicity and elasticity of the cloud-like services model for Hadoop and Spark -- while retaining their data and systems on-premises."

BlueData's new software release builds on the company's existing Big Data partnerships, making it even easier to deploy the infrastructure as well as the analytical tools and applications for Big Data. EPIC 2.0 now offers an enhanced "App Store" for common Big Data applications. In addition to Spark and open source Hadoop distributions from Cloudera and Hortonworks, software applications from partners such as AtScale, Arcadia Data, Platfora, and Splunk are now included in the App Store and available via one-click deployment. Docker images of these products will be available in the App Store for fully automated self-service deployment, accelerating time to business value with Big Data analytics. This release also expands the scope of BlueData's "bring your own app" support by allowing users to quick add images for any Big Data application or data processing platform (such as Kafka or Samza) to the App Store.

"BlueData's mission has always been to provide customers with an 'easy button' for Big Data. EPIC 2.0 builds upon this mission and further extends our ability to offer Big-Data-as-a-Service in a multi-tenant, on-premises deployment model," said Kumar Sreekanti, CEO of BlueData. "Our software innovations continue to break new ground and shatter pre-conceived assumptions about deploying Big Data infrastructure and applications. With just a few mouse clicks, our customers can now deploy instant clusters for Hadoop, Spark, and other Big Data tools running on Docker containers."

BlueData will be featuring the new EPIC 2.0 release at the Strata + Hadoop Summit in New York, September 29 to October 1 in booth 637. BlueData's vice president of products, Anant Chintamaneni, will be speaking at Strata + Hadoop World presenting on "Requirements for secure, multi-tenant Hadoop: It's much more than YARN" on Wednesday, September 30 at 5:25pm ET. BlueData co-founder and chief architect Tom Phelan will be speaking on "What does it mean to virtualize the Hadoop distributed file system?" at 1:15pm ET Thursday, October 1.
