BMO Harris Bank and Rockford IceHogs Promote Literacy in Rockford Schools Through "Goals for Grades" Donation

ROCKFORD, IL--(Marketwired - Jun 21, 2013) - BMO Harris Bank and the Rockford IceHogs are teaming up to promote literacy in our schools by donating $6,000 to "Goals for Grades," a program that supports "I READ," an early grade reading initiative through United Way of Rock River Valley.

Through the "Goals for Grades" program, an initiative started in 2011, BMO Harris Bank once again donated $20 for every goal scored during each regular season game in the 2012/2013 season at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford. A total of 246 goals were made equalling, $4,920 with BMO Harris Bank then increasing the contribution to $6,000.

"The 'Goals for Grades' program is one way we partner with the IceHogs in enriching our community and celebrating the achievements of our local team," Andrea Ward, Market President, BMO Harris Bank. "It combines the success of our city with the high value we place on education in our district, and we are proud to continue this new tradition for a third season next fall."

"I READ" is a partnership between United Way and the Rockford and Harlem School Districts that pairs reading mentors with kindergarten students and prepares students to read proficiently by fourth grade. Reading mentors will meet with students weekly during the school day until they complete third grade. Approximately 500 kindergarten and first grade students at 14 schools in both Harlem and Rockford school districts were connected with reading mentors during 2012-2013 school year. United Way is looking to recruit an additional 100 reading mentors for the upcoming school year.

"Reading proficiency by fourth grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success," said Paul Logli, President & CEO of United Way of Rock River Valley. "Together with BMO Harris Bank and the Rockford IceHogs, we are helping young children learn to read so they can read to learn."

"The 'Goals for Grades' program reinforces our ongoing commitment to the greater Rockford community," said Mike Dunn, Chairman of RAVE, which owns the Rockford IceHogs. "Working hand-in-hand with BMO Harris and the United Way of Rock River Valley, we continue to make a difference in the future and education of our youth."

The check presentation will be made on June 21, 2013 at 10 a.m. during the "I READ" recruitment program at Donald C. Parker Early Education Center, Harlem School District.
