BNSF Says Iowa's Application for Stimulus Funds Will Help Improve the State's Freight Mobility and Economy

FORT WORTH, TX--(Marketwire - September 22, 2009) - BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) today said that the state of Iowa's application for a $25 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant to replace the Burlington Bridge will have a significant impact on improving freight and passenger mobility and the economy in Iowa.

The Burlington Bridge spans the Mississippi River, connecting the cities of Burlington, Iowa and Gulf Port, Illinois. The bridge is among the three busiest mainline railroad bridges spanning the upper Mississippi River and is a vital link in the national transportation network.

If granted, this project could bring public benefits of more than $123 million, create hundreds of jobs during construction, and put more than $182 million into the economy. Construction could begin in 2010.

"On behalf of BNSF, I want to thank all of the business and community leaders and public officials who have worked so hard in support of this project," said Matthew K. Rose, BNSF chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Iowa Governor Chet Culver, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, and Iowa Department of Transportation Director Nancy Richardson are leaders in finding solutions to attract new businesses and jobs while also reducing air emissions and congestion. We appreciate their strong engagement as well as the support from U.S. Senators Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin and Congressmen Dave Loebsack and Phil Hare. Their vision will help ensure this region will remain one of the most efficient and competitive freight transportation markets in the nation."

Additional support for stimulus funds for the Burlington Bridge was provided by the following:

-- Mayor William L. Ell, City of Burlington, Iowa
-- Mayor Hans K. Trousil, City of West Burlington, Iowa
-- Mayor Warren Woods, City of Creston, Iowa
-- Jeff M. Heland, Chair, Des Moines County Board of Supervisors
-- Robert W. Beck, Vice Chair, Des Moines County Board of Supervisors
-- Daniel E. Cahill, Member, Des Moines County Board of Supervisors
-- Greater Burlington Partnership
-- Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission

"It is through projects like the Burlington Bridge and the tremendous support from the community that will allow the United States to create and sustain the pre-eminent surface transportation system in the world," Rose said.
