Bodies Revealed Opens at the Connecticut Science Center September 21

Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI) at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center Presents Blockbuster Exhibit

HARTFORD, CT--(Marketwired - Sep 13, 2013) - The Connecticut Science Center introduces the fascinating blockbuster exhibit, BODIES REVEALED, this fall, presented locally by the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI) at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. The internationally touring exhibit is produced by Premier Exhibitions, Inc., and will be on display September 21 through January 5 in the Saint Francis Care Traveling Exhibit Gallery on the Science Center's fourth floor.

"Bodies Revealed is an important educational event that the public should experience," said Dr. Steve Schutzer, CJRI's Medical Director. "It gives visitors a chance to see what only doctors generally can: the amazing and complex systems that work within the human body. Viewing this exhibition will inspire a greater understanding and appreciation of how magnificent and complicated our own bodies really are."

"This Exhibition offers a powerful insight into the wonder and intricacies of the human body," said Matt Fleury, Connecticut Science Center President and CEO. "The human body is a most extraordinary creation, and we increasingly find that knowledge of our bodies must be the domain of the individual as well as medical professionals. From the unimaginably intricate engineering of joints to the unforgiving effects of unhealthy lifestyles, Bodies Revealed is a truly eye-opening and educational experience."

The BODIES REVEALED exhibition will offer Connecticut Science Center visitors an opportunity to see inside carefully preserved anatomical specimens and learn the detailed structure and function of the human body. The Exhibition takes visitors through galleries providing an up-close look inside the skeletal, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, circulatory and other systems of the human body. Many of the whole-body specimens are displayed in vivid athletic poses, allowing the visitor to relate them to everyday activities. In addition, specimens illustrate the damage caused to organs by over-eating and lack of exercise. A healthy lung is featured next to a black lung ravaged by smoking in a vivid comparison more powerful than any textbook image.

The human body specimens in the Exhibition are preserved through a revolutionary technique called polymer preservation. In this process, human tissue is permanently preserved using liquid silicone rubber that is treated and hardened. The end result is a rubberized specimen, preserved to the cellular level, showcasing the complexity of the body's many bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs. The full-body specimens can take more than a year to prepare.

The popular educational exhibit will appeal to visitors spanning a wide range of ages and interests and will add to the robust offering of more than 165 permanent exhibits always on display at of one of Connecticut's premier learning and tourism destinations. Connecticut Science Center members can look forward to an exclusive preview of the new exhibit before it opens to the general public. Entry to the BODIES REVEALED exhibit is included free with the purchase of General Admission or Membership.

The Exhibition is currently receiving worldwide acclaim, attracting nearly 15 million visitors from cities around the world. Premier Exhibitions, Inc. is a major provider of museum-quality touring exhibitions throughout the world. Special thanks to the media sponsor, The Hartford Courant.
