According to research by uSwitch, the price of boiler cover has gone up by as much as 20 per cent compared to the same cover in 2009. The average price of annual cover has shifted to £142 in 2010 compared to £125 a year ago with the most basic of options available increasing in price by 20 per cent, moving to £80 from £67 in 2009.

Out of the nine services reviewed, just British Gas HomeCare could boast a fall in prices compared to 2009.

British Gas HomeCare 100 fell almost three per cent from £144 in 2009 to £139.80 this year. However, since the study was carried out, prices for British Gas HomeCare have been increased with the winter months looming. HomeCare 100 is now offered for £13 per month for the first year – a total annual cost of £156.

But despite this, boiler cover is still an important safeguard against potential breakdowns or replacement requirements with a serious repair job on a boiler costing as much as £1200.
