Bombardier Brings Metro and Tram Technology to Russia

BERLIN, GERMANY--(Marketwire - July 12, 2012) - Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation today signed co-operation agreements with Russian rail manufacturer UVZ to jointly develop and sell state-of-the-art metros and trams. Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev took part in the signing ceremony in Yekaterinburg. Oleg Sienko, Chief Executive Officer of UVZ and André Navarri, President and Chief Operating Officer, Bombardier Transportation, signed the agreement on behalf of the two companies.

Bombardier and UVZ will jointly develop and market metro trains specifically designed for the challenging requirements of Moscow Metro and other cities in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Worldwide, Bombardier metro cars transport passengers on more than seven billion trips every year in over 40 cities, including New York, London, Berlin, Paris, Stockholm, Helsinki, Shanghai and New Delhi. The company has delivered more than 12,100 metro cars in the past 20 years.

Bombardier also provides UVZ with a licence to manufacture and sell low-floor trams with Bombardier technology in Russia. The licensed product is a variant of the BOMBARDIER FLEXITY platform of vehicles operating worldwide, designed for operation mainly on existing networks. As the market leader for trams and light rail vehicles (LRVs), Bombardier offers the most comprehensive portfolio in the industry. A total of 3,500 trams and light rail vehicles from Bombardier are on order or operating in nearly 100 cities in more than 20 countries around the globe. These range from 100 per cent low-floor trams and 70 per cent low-floor trams and LRVs to proven dual system solutions.

Both products feature the world's most advanced technologies in vehicle manufacturing, including the reliable BOMBARDIER FLEXX bogies and BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and control system.

About Bombardier in Russia

Bombardier Transportation's long-standing relationship with Russia and the CIS began more than 50 years ago through Deutsche Waggonbau AG (DWA), acquired by Bombardier in the late 1990s. From 1948 to 1995, DWA manufactured one out of every two passenger rail coaches made for the Soviet Union and later Russia.

In 1996, Bombardier established the first international joint venture to be formed with the Russian Railways (RZD). In Russia, operating on 15 regional branches of the Russian rail network from Kaliningrad to the Far East, these systems control more than 3,400 point-machines and 507 km of automatic line-blocks.

In 2010, Bombardier also purchased a stake in the RZD manufacturing subsidiary known as Elteza, Russia's largest signalling equipment producer. It designs, develops and produces rail signalling and train control systems for Russia, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Baltic states. The new partnership is one of the first examples of the privatisation of a Russian Railways' subsidiary and part of the modernisation strategy for RZD. This new agreement has led to the creation of an Elteza department dedicated to new technologies and the manufacture of products, which has already started for EBI Lock 950 and will also include the latest generation of wayside products.
