Bombardier Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Russian Joint Venture

MOSCOW, RUSSIA--(Marketwire - May 18, 2011) - Bombardier Transportation's signalling engineering joint venture (JV) celebrates its 15th anniversary today. The milestone is being marked by a customer event as part of the Russian Railways' (RZD) Signalling and CBI conference attended by key Russian, CIS and Baltic customers and partners.

The Moscow-based Bombardier Transporation (Signal) Ltd, a joint venture of Bombardier Transportation and RZD, was the first international joint venture (JV) to be formed for the Russian Railways. The company focuses on the implementation of Bombardier's proven BOMBARDIER EBI Lock 950 computer-based interlocking (CBI) systems, and has now put into operation the CBI technology at 101 stations in Russia and 29 abroad. The first delivery took place at the Kalashnikovo station of the October branch of the Russian Railways in June 1999. Today, the system is in operation on 15 regional branches of the Russian rail network, from Kaliningrad to the Far East, controlling more than 3,000 point-machines and approximately 350 km of automatic line-blocks.

Konstantin Khromushkin, General Director of the JV, said: "This is a further important milestone for our joint venture, reflecting the success of our ongoing international cooperation, combining Bombardier's global technology and Russian engineering traditions. For the last 15 years we are very proud to have been first in supporting the ongoing modernisation of the Russian rail infrastructure and we look forward to further implementation of our innovative solutions and high-tech products in Russia."

EBI Lock CBI systems provide major enhancements to capacity and flexibility and high availability compared to conventional systems. The stations can be controlled either locally or from any remote control centre, and EBI Lock components can be serviced in the field without disturbing train traffic. With the most country-specific adaptations of any CBI system world-wide and over 800 units in operation globally in total, EBI Lock units can be customised to suit the requirements of different rail administrations and interface with other types of computerised or all-relay interlocking systems.

The Bombardier Transporation (Signal) Ltd engineering joint venture with RZD was established in 1996 and today has a workforce of more than 130 employees. The company provides services for the whole life cycle of the EBI Lock 950 CBI system from project design, to operation and maintenance. It was the first company certified to deliver the latest generation of advanced signalling equipment adapted to the technical requirements of RZD and its products continue to meet the latest national standards.

In December 2010, Bombardier Transportation signed an agreement with JSC RZD to purchase a stake in the RZD subsidiary, the signalling equipment manufacturer United Electrical Engineering Plants, known as Elteza. According to this agreement, a new department dedicated to new technologies including EBI Lock 950 as well as the latest generation of wayside products will be realised.

Bombardier Transportation's Rail Control Solutions portfolio covers the whole range of BOMBARDIERCITYFLO mass transit solutions, from manual to fully automatic, as well as communication-based systems. It also provides BOMBARDIERINTERFLO mainline solutions, from conventional to ERTMS Level 2 systems. Bombardier also provides a complete palette of wayside and onboard signalling products.
