Bombardier Launches ORBITA Rail Maintenance Solution in North America

New Rail Maintenance Tool Helps Identify and Address Equipment Issues Before They Occur

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 5, 2007) - Bombardier Transportation announced today the North American launch of the ORBITA rail maintenance solution, a ground-breaking innovation in rail services, at the American Public Transportation Association's 2007 Rail Conference in Toronto. Bombardier's rail services business in North America is now marketing the ORBITA system as a new feature available within the third-party fleet maintenance portfolio it offers to rail transit operators.

Launched internationally by Bombardier in 2006, the ORBITA solution is currently deployed with First ScotRail in the United Kingdom, which operates long and short-distance regional rail services in Scotland, as well as overnight service to London. Since implementing this new solution, First ScotRail has experienced substantial reductions in maintenance costs and significant improvements in fleet on-time performance.

The ORBITA solution is rooted in the principles of condition-based maintenance (CBM), an approach used extensively in the aerospace industry. CBM involves closely measuring the condition of rail equipment and analyzing performance trends to predict when future failures are likely to occur. Knowledge is then used to identify and address issues before they can impact transit service. The ORBITA system is designed to help rail transit operators increase on-time performance, improve reliability, reduce in-service failures, maximize equipment utilization and cost-effectively maintain rail assets.

"Our ORBITA solution offers a very compelling combination of human expertise, advanced data analysis and leading-edge information management technology," said William Spurr, President, Bombardier Transportation -- North America. "It is already providing demonstrated value in a live rail network environment in the United Kingdom, and we are pleased to offer it to our customers here in North America."

More About ORBITA

Bombardier developed the ORBITA solution as a tool to gather, analyze and interpret equipment performance data more effectively. It combines advanced data filtering and visualization capabilities, automated alerts and advisories, and teams of Bombardier rail experts to turn high volumes of raw data into useful knowledge that can help maintenance teams better understand equipment performance trends and anticipate failures before they impact train operation. The ORBITA solution transfers data remotely from vehicles to wayside control centers in real time, where teams of Bombardier experts analyze it, coordinate with maintenance centers, and cross-reference information from Bombardier's extensive database of global rail fleet information to establish patterns of equipment performance. This allows teams to diagnose and identify potential issues more effectively, and ensure they are addressed pro-actively.
