Bombardier Transportation Releases its 2008 Sustainability Report, 'Shaping the Future of Mobility' at UITP Congress in Vienna

Report Highlights Intensified Efforts and Stakeholder Dialogue on Energy-saving Products, 'Design for Environment' and Commitment to Employees and Communities

BERLIN, GERMANY--(Marketwire - June 9, 2009) - Bombardier Transportation today launched its second sustainability report, Shaping the Future of Mobility, at the 58th World Congress of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) in Vienna, Austria.

"We are pleased to present our sustainability report for 2008, which gives a transparent overview of our corporate responsibility strategy, management approach, operational goals and achievements", said Andre Navarri, President, Bombardier Transportation. "The world faces some of the greatest challenges of its time with global warming, congestion, pollution, resource scarcity and a severe economic crisis. This report describes how we address these issues by keeping environmental stewardship, social accountability and sustainable mobility at the forefront of our drive for economic growth."

"The UITP Congress here in Vienna is an excellent occasion to release this report. It is published as part of our commitment to the UITP Charter on Sustainable Development, launched in 2003, of which we were the first in our sector to sign", Andre Navarri concluded.

Even though rail is already considered to be one of the most environmentally sound means of transportation, Bombardier is making every effort to optimize the performance of its vehicles. Its focus on 'Design for Environment' aims at increasing resource and energy-efficiency as well as recyclability while reducing emissions, waste and hazardous substances. The BOMBARDIER ECO4 portfolio of products and technolgies, which enables rail operators to increase energy efficiency by up to 50 percent, is just one example of the progress made since Bombardier released its first sustainability report in 2007.

In 2002, Bombardier Transportation established five-year goals to enhance the environmental performance of its manufacturing sites. By the end of 2008, it had reduced its water consumption by 32 percent, its energy consumption by 22 percent and its greenhouse gas emissions by 18 percent.

In preparing this report, Bombardier Transportation applied the most recent guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). GRI is a multi-stakeholder governed institution that provides global standards in sustainability reporting and is a collaborating centre of the United Nations Environment Programme. The Group also used materiality analysis, which considers both external stakeholders' viewpoints and internal perspectives, to identify topics of importance in sustainability reporting. Bombardier Transportation further reports upon its initiatives to be a good member of the communities, cultures and countries in which it operates. Examples include stakeholder dialogues and education and training initiatives such as the Bombardier Education & Training South Africa program "STARS" as well as partnerships that tackle poverty and disparity in India.

The Bombardier Transportation Sustainability Report is one part of the overall commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) defined by Bombardier Inc. More information on CSR at Bombardier is available at www.bombardier.com.
