Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has been named a winner of the Australian 2016 Smart Infrastructure Project award. The award is in recognition of the new AUD $190 million Wulkuraka Maintenance Centre that has been purpose built for the Queensland Government's New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) Project.

The Queensland Government's Department of Transport and Main Roads, Qtectic, Bombardier and Laing O'Rourke were named joint winners by Infrastructure Partnerships Australia, which runs the Annual Infrastructure Oration and National Infrastructure Awards.

"Bombardier is a world-class provider of integrated rail systems, and winning this award is testimony that this wonderful new piece of train maintenance infrastructure is raising the bar not only in Australia, but globally," said Paul Brown, Bombardier Transportation's Project Director for the NGR project.

The new centre is part of the Queensland Government's AUD $4.4 billion transportation investment - the State's largest single investment in public transport. The NGR project includes the purchase of 75 new six-car trains, the construction of the new centre as well as the 30 years of maintenance of the new trains.

The Bombardier-led consortium (known as Qtectic) won the tender for the project in December 2013 and Laing O'Rourke started construction on the new maintenance centre in February 2014 based on a virtual model. Using advanced digital engineering, or Building Information Modelling (BIM), enabled the centre to be completed in October 2015, six weeks ahead of schedule.

The Smart Infrastructure Project award recognises the use of technology to deliver better, more efficient infrastructure services. In particular, the award acknowledges projects where the use of smarter technologies has contributed to superior service outcomes. This year there were four project finalists from various locations in Australia.

In accepting the award Mr. Brown said, "Bombardier's NGR maintenance team was involved in the design of the centre from the outset, and we worked very closely with the Queensland Government and Laing O'Rourke to deliver the best solution. As a result we have smart state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that the maintenance of Queensland's new trains is easier and faster."

"This is the most advanced train maintenance centre that has been used in Queensland."

Key features of the facility include a dedicated wheel lathe, synchronised lifting jacks, cleaning and decanting facilities, and an Automated Visual Inspection System (AVI System).

The AVI System scans the new trains as they return to the centre to provide vehicle condition data and includes scans for graffiti, condition of the braking system, wheel damage, bearing temperature and the thickness of roof-mounted pantographs.
