Bombardier Wins $63 Million US Contract for Electrical Multiple Units in Queensland, Australia

BERLIN, GERMANY--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 19, 2006) - Bombardier Transportation and joint venture partner EDI Rail(i) have been awarded an order by the Queensland Government in Australia to build 20 three-car electric commuter trains. The contract is valued at approximately $138 million US ($175 millions AU,104 million euros,). Bombardier's share of the contract will be about $63 million US ($80 million AU, 47 million euros). Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2009 and continue into 2010.

This order is a follow on from trains currently in production for Queensland Rail. "This brings the total number of passenger rail cars supplied by the joint venture to Queensland Rail to almost 600." said Dan Osborne, Managing Director of Bombardier Transportation Australia. "This order reflects the confidence that Queensland Rail has in our vehicles. These vehicles are designed and built here in Australia with significant local content."

Bombardier's scope in the project is vehicle integration, the structural design of the rail car, bogie design and the supply of propulsion, electrical and communication systems. The 20 trains will operate at up to 130 kph, six of the trains will be fitted with toilet facilities to cater for interurban services; the other vehicles will be used on suburban services. The trains are stainless steel construction with narrow gauge, 25kV propulsion.

Assembly of the new trains will be carried out at Bombardier's facility and EDI Rail's facility in Maryborough, Queensland. Propulsion and traction equipment will be manufactured at Bombardier's plants in Vasteras, Sweden and Pittsburgh, USA. Testing and commissioning will be carried out jointly. This order builds on over 600 narrow gauge carriages already in service in Brisbane and Perth. The first of Queensland Rail's new fleet of trains, ordered in November 2004, began track testing in August this year.

The Bombardier Transportation Group has its global headquarters in Berlin, Germany, with a presence in over 60 countries. It has an installed base of approximately 97,000 vehicles worldwide. The Group offers the broadest product portfolio and is recognized as the leader in the global rail sector.
