Boston Eye Doctor Discusses Ortho K Lenses for Non-Surgical Vision Correction

This vision correction treatment is designed to help patients comfortably improve their vision and slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness). According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, more than 150 million Americans wear eyeglasses, contact lenses, or some form of corrective eyewear to improve their vision. Dr. Haigh notes several reasons why glasses and contacts may not be the best method to correct your vision, including the following:

While Ortho K therapy can be a more convenient method of vision correction than glasses or contacts, Dr. Haigh says the benefits need to be maintained. He says the effects of Ortho K typically last between 24 to 48 hours, and they are reversible if use of the lenses are discontinued. However, Dr. Haigh notes that Ortho K can be a great way to reap benefits somewhat similar to LASIK eye surgery without actually having to undergo a surgical procedure. He says Ortho K lenses can be an option for patients who are too young for LASIK or for patients who are not ready to have a laser vision correction procedure.

As with any medical treatment, there are risks associated with Ortho K. Dr. Haigh says the risks are typically minimal, similar to side effects which can be felt by the use of regular daily contact lenses. Many of Dr. Haigh's patients do not experience negative side effects and can wear Ortho K lenses comfortably, he notes.
