Boston Plastic Surgeon Says Blepharoplasty Can Be Most Rejuvenative Facial Procedure

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - Jan 22, 2015) - Blepharoplasty, also referred to as eyelid surgery, is a procedure intended to improve the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids, therefore creating a more rested, rejuvenated look. According to Dr. Leonard Miller, a board certified plastic surgeon in Boston, ideal candidates for this operation often demonstrate one or more of the following indications:

  • A history of dry eyes
  • Sagging upper eyelids -- the eyelid is positioned low on the iris
  • Lower eyelid laxity -- the white of the eye is showing below the iris

At his practice, Dr. Miller says blepharoplasty is performed as a standalone procedure 50 percent of the time, in combination with a facelift 35 percent of the time, and in conjunction with procedures such as fat injections, liposuction of the neck, and laser skin rejuvenation 15 percent of the time. Based on the patient's specific needs and cosmetic goals, he says eyelid surgery can be employed to target either the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both.

When addressing both sets of eyelids, Dr. Miller notes that an incision will generally be made along the natural crease of the upper lid and just underneath the lashes of the lower lid to help conceal any potential scarring. Excess skin and fat will then be removed, and incisions will be closed using thin sutures. For patients who only need fat pockets removed from the lower eyelids, however, the Boston plastic surgeon reveals that the incision can often be made inside the eyelid so no scarring is visible.

Regarding recovery from blepharoplasty, Dr. Miller states that some swelling and bruising may occur initially, but both side effects should subside relatively quickly. Patients should keep their heads elevated and apply a cold compress to the eyes for at least 12 hours following surgery, he says, and most people are able to return to work and normal daily routines after about a week.

In the end, Dr. Miller says eyelid surgery can be the most rejuvenative facial procedures available. "Blepharoplasty can make someone look much younger and yield the most dramatic results. It's the single procedure that creates the most significant change to someone's appearance -- not to make them look unnatural, but to make them look more youthful and more alert."
