Boston-Power Captures Number One Spot on AlwaysOn Inaugural Northeast 100 Top Private Company List
WESTBOROUGH, MA--(Marketwire - April 1, 2008) - Boston-Power, Inc.®, a rapidly growing
provider of first-to-market portable power solutions, today announced that
it has been chosen as the highest ranking company on AlwaysOn's debut
listing of Northeast 100 Top Private Companies.
Among the world's most closely watched energy storage startups,
Boston-Power's internationally recognized executive and technology teams,
blue chip venture investment partners and next-generation Lithium-ion
battery technology were cited as important factors that earned the company
the top spot.
Boston-Power and the Northeast 100 Top Companies will be honored at the
AlwaysOn Venture Summit East to be held April 7 - April 9, 2008, at the
Four Seasons Hotel in Boston, MA. The first-annual Northeast 100 list was
compiled by the AlwaysOn editorial panel. To be eligible, companies had to
be creating new business opportunities in high-growth markets,
demonstrating significant market traction and pursuing game-changing
technology in a key sector. AlwaysOn received hundreds of nominations for
this year's list.
"Congratulations to Boston-Power for its vision, innovation and ability to
execute," said Tony Perkins, Founder and Editor, AlwaysOn Network.
"Batteries represent one of the most critically important areas in
technology today, whether they're powering notebook computers, mobile
phones, consumer electronics or hybrid electric vehicles. Boston-Power is
making a name for itself and we're pleased to honor the company by placing
it at the top of our list."
To compile the Northeast Top 100 Companies of 2008 list, AlwaysOn surveyed
more than 500 venture investors, investment bankers, and technology
insiders. Those industry influencers nominated hundreds of companies, which
were subsequently evaluated and the winners selected. To warrant inclusion,
each Northeast 100 company had to exemplify leadership among its peers in
the following areas: innovation, market opportunity, commercialization,
media buzz, and stakeholder value creation.
Boston-Power's Sonata redefines the portable power space by establishing
new benchmarks in safety, cycle life, performance and environmental
sustainability. Initially targeting notebook computers, Sonata delivers the
longest cycle life ever available from any Lithium-ion battery. That
translates to longer and more usable power -- like-new performance for
three years versus current batteries that start to fade in only three to
six months. Sonata's "drop-in" design enables it to be used with existing
notebook computers, requiring no design changes on the part of notebook
computer original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Highlighting its momentum, Boston-Power recently announced $45 million in
Series C funding, bringing total investment in the company to $70 million.
This round was one of the biggest venture investments for the year in
energy storage and among the top 10 largest investments overall in New
England in 2007. In January, Boston-Power also announced expansion of its
mass production capabilities through a strategic relationship with GP
Batteries, the number one battery manufacturer in Asia outside Japan and
the top consumer battery manufacturer in Greater China.
"AlwaysOn has a track record for identifying early on many of the tech
industry's most successful technology startups, so we're extremely honored
and humbled to be chosen as the top company on its inaugural Northeast 100
list," said Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud, Founder and CEO of Boston-Power.
"The demand for a safer, longer lasting, higher performing and more
environmentally responsible battery is greater than ever. With Sonata,
Boston-Power is answering that call."
