Boston Residents Walk to Help Solve the Cruel Mystery of Lupus

America's Largest Lupus Walk Program Takes Place at Boston Common on Saturday, October 24

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - October 05, 2015) - The Lupus Foundation of America will host its 2015 Walk to End Lupus Now™ event in Boston beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 24 at Boston Common Parkman Bandstand. The event will feature appearances by the Patriots Cheerleaders and lupus experts, Dr. Karen H. Costenbader of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dr. George Tsokos of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The largest lupus walk program in the country, Walk to End Lupus Now events are held in more than 60 cities, bringing together community members -- people with lupus, friends, families, health care providers and celebrities -- to raise money for lupus research and education programs, increase awareness of the disease and rally public support for those who feel its brutal impact.

"I walk for my God daughter, Evette. I'm humbled and honored to be named Honorary Chair of Walk to End Lupus Now in Boston," said Juan Lopez, Boston City Council member and host of Politica Entre Amigos on WCEA - TV. "We need to bring greater attention and awareness to this under-recognized disease to the community of Boston."

An estimated 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide have lupus. Despite the widespread prevalence of lupus, research on the disease has remained underfunded, relative to its scope and devastation. Every step taken raises funds for lupus research and supports the Lupus Foundation of America's mission to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus.

"While we work to solve the cruel mystery of lupus, we must ensure that all Boston residents affected by lupus have access to the resources and support they need," said Sandra C. Raymond, President and CEO of the Lupus Foundation of America. "By coming together to raise funds and awareness, Boston residents are showing their power and support for people with lupus, families, friends and entire the community of those suffering with lupus."

Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals is a national sponsor of Walk to End Lupus Now. Registration for the Walk is open online at walktoendlupusnow.org/boston. Participants can also create a personal fundraising page on the Walk website to raise money, recruit new team members and get valuable fundraising tips.

About Lupus

Lupus is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body. It is difficult to diagnose, hard to live with and a challenge to treat. Lupus is a cruel mystery because it is hidden from view and undefined, has a range of symptoms, strikes without warning, and has no known cause and no known cure. Its health effects can range from a skin rash to a heart attack. Lupus is debilitating and destructive and can be fatal, yet research on lupus remains underfunded relative to diseases of similar scope and devastation.
