Bowne Releases Migration Utility for New SEC XBRL Taxonomies

Bowne XChanger™ Helps Companies Easily Upgrade XBRL Documents to 2009 Taxonomies

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - June 22, 2009) - Bowne & Co., Inc. (NYSE: BNE), a global leader in shareholder and marketing communications services, today announced the release of the Bowne XChanger™ Taxonomy Migration Assistant. Bowne XChanger allows Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) registrants to update XBRL (Extensible Business Reporting Language) documents created using a prior version of the US GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) taxonomies with the recently released 2009 version. This solution is an easy-to-use desktop application and is available for download at Bowne's main XBRL web site, www.bowne.com/xbrl.

The SEC recently announced that the EDGAR System will begin officially supporting the new taxonomies on July 22, 2009 and is strongly encouraging companies to begin using the new taxonomies immediately. Companies that have previously created XBRL extension taxonomies and instance documents using a prior version of the US GAAP taxonomies will need to update and review their documents based on this new version. While companies could elect to update their XBRL documents manually, or pay fees to have them updated by a third party, Bowne XChanger automates this process. Bowne's full-service XBRL clients are automatically upgraded to the 2009 taxonomies using Bowne XChanger as part of our comprehensive full-service offering.

"Companies preparing for the mandate have spent considerable time and effort using the previous version of the US GAAP taxonomies," said Bill Penders, President, Bowne & Co., Inc. "Bowne XChanger, in conjunction with the Bowne Interactive XBRL Viewer™, further solidifies Bowne's leadership position in the XBRL application space. The SEC has stated that XBRL taxonomy updates can be expected regularly, and Bowne XChanger is equipped to help registrants meet the daunting task of updating their documents head-on."

Bowne XChanger allows instance documents and/or extension taxonomies to be updated to the new version of the US GAAP taxonomy. Bowne XChanger makes the technical updates to the files while providing detailed results as to what previously used GAAP and extension taxonomy elements (or "tags") are found in the new taxonomy. Since the 2009 US GAAP taxonomies will not be supported by the SEC EDGAR System until July 22, 2009, companies should upload their Bowne XChanger-updated XBRL documents to the Bowne Interactive XBRL Viewer for additional review and technical validation. The Bowne XBRL Interactive Viewer is a web-based XBRL application available at www.bowne.com/xbrl.
