BPI Stands Ready to Support the SEED Center and America's Community Colleges in Green Jobs Training

MALTA, NEW YORK--(Marketwire - Oct. 18, 2010) - The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) applauds the founding of the SEED (Sustainability Education and Economic Development) Center - a leadership initiative and resource center for America's community colleges to prepare the 21st century workforce for green economy jobs.

BPI, the nation's premier standards development and credentialing organization for residential energy efficiency retrofit and weatherization professionals, stands ready to support the SEED Center, bringing to bear extensive experience collaborating with community colleges and other BPI affiliate training organizations. BPI works with these groups to ensure alignment of curricula with the written and field exams required to obtain BPI Certified Professional credentials.

"From the start BPI has recognized the crucial role the nation's community colleges play in training students for green collar jobs," said Larry Zarker, CEO of BPI. "BPI was founded on the premise that high standards of knowledge and skill are prerequisites for successful work. That's why we've developed comprehensive standards for home performance contractors and affiliations with 220 local training organizations, including 48 community colleges."

The number of community colleges in BPI's coast-to-coast network of training affiliate organizations has grown rapidly over the past two years, from seven in 2008 to 48 today. BPI works with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and individual institutions to develop curricula and programs that will prepare the workforce to meet market demands and publically-sponsored energy efficiency programs. Both classroom theory and hands-on field training are provided by BPI's nationwide network of training affiliate organizations.

Individuals that have been trained, tested and certified to BPI's standards use the house-as-a-system approach to improving the performance of existing homes - an approach proven to reduce home owner annual utility bills by as much as 20% or more. That's why BPI standards or equivalent are cited by the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as several state Weatherization Assistance Programs.

BPI provides the following credentials to qualified candidates:

  • Certification of individuals in building analyst, heating, AC/heat pump, shell/envelope, manufactured housing and multi-family designations
  • Accreditation of contracting companies committed to delivering quality home performance improvements
  • A formal, national, third-party quality assurance program
  • Affiliation of training organizations that deliver BPI services in their market
