Bradford Networks Upgrades Network Sentry; Provides Greater Flexibility in Network Access Policy Enforcement

Network Sentry 5.2 Improves Automated Discovery of IP Devices; Helps Organizations Strike the Right Balance Between Security and Accessibility

CONCORD, NH--(Marketwire - Jun 20, 2011) - Bradford Networks, the best choice for network security in evolving IT environments, today announced a new version of its Network Sentry solution, improving the detection and management of IP devices on a network, while providing organizations with greater flexibility in enforcing network access policies. Bradford will demonstrate the new version of Network Sentry publicly for the first time at the Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit, taking place in National Harbor, MD from June 20-23 (Booth #42).

Network Sentry is the first network security offering that automatically identifies and profiles all devices and users on a network, providing complete visibility and control. New features and enhancements significantly improve Network Sentry in five key areas:

  • Greater Flexibility: Provides more ways to configure and enforce access policies, and to communicate with administrators and users. Examples include:
    • Several enhancements provide greater flexibility in authentication, custom device scans, remediation and policy creation.
    • In wireless environments, multiple SSIDs on Access Points (APs) can be managed independently of one another.
    • SMS text messages can be used to provide guests with user names and passwords, or to notify an administrator when an alarm has been triggered.
    • Enhanced firewall integration with third-party vendors including Sonicwall and Fortinet adds even more options for policy enforcement.
  • Improved Network Visibility: Network Sentry builds a detailed topology of the entire network for complete visibility, providing administrators with more information about the network environment and more ways to view and access the data.
  • Automated Discovery: The new release significantly improves the management and detection of IP devices, enabling organizations to discover and manage the latest consumer and mobile devices connecting to their networks, including tablets, eReaders, smartphones and more.
  • Ease of Administration: Multiple enhancements have been made in Network Sentry's user interface (UI), simplifying tasks and improving productivity for administrators. Examples include simplified administration of location-based access policies and global configuration for multiple wireless APs at the same time.
  • Enhanced End-User Experience: Less user interaction is required for authentication of devices that roam on the network, and more options are available for remediation in the event that a users' device fails a policy scan. Examples include:
    • Caching of user IDs (similar to credential caching in 802.1x) allows users to move freely in the network without having to log in repeatedly.
    • Delayed remediation allows users to be warned of policy violations while still allowing network access for a specified amount of time. For example, a user might be notified that his anti-virus software is out of date and must be updated within 1 day to avoid having his device placed in quarantine.

Striking a Balance Between Security and Accessibility
As the Consumerization of IT continues unabated, organizations are under increasing pressure to allow more user devices access to their networks, while still enforcing security policies that address the sophisticated security threats of today. These new demands often leave organizations with an all or nothing choice -- limiting network access to all consumer and mobile devices to ensure strict security policy is enforced.

Network Sentry 5.2 was designed to address these growing challenges, providing even more flexibility for managing and enforcing access policies.

"Network infrastructures have undergone a significant transition in recent years, the proliferation of mobile and consumer devices have resulted in the erosion of the endpoint. Organizations need flexible network security solutions that enable them to enforce the right policy on the right user and device," said Frank Andrus, CTO of Bradford Networks. "Network Sentry was architected with this evolution in mind. The new enhancements provide our customers with greater control over enforcing access policies, resulting in a greater balance between productivity and security."
