Brazil Reaches 6.1 Million Visitors in 2013 as World Cup Kick-Off Approaches

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - April 25, 2014) - Market Research Company Euromonitor International revealed today the latest trends for the travel and tourism industry globally and in Brazil at WTM Vision São Paulo.

An estimated 1.6 million international tourists will visit Brazil during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The country faces many challenges, including civil protests, a rush to complete infrastructure projects and a capacity shortfall. Security is also a key concern, along with probable traffic congestion, and over capacity issues at airports.

However, there are many positives from hosting the event, including enhanced global exposure, a consolidation of Brazil's competitive positioning as a mega event host and improved tourism infrastructure and services.

"Last year was a record for international tourist arrivals globally, which grew by 5% to 1,087 million," said Alexis Frick, Research Associate at Euromonitor International. "Brazil saw substantial growth in outbound expenditure, up by 14% in 2013. The country is also on track to meet its target of receiving seven million international tourists by 2014, up from an estimated 5.7 million visitors in 2012."

Brazil reached 6.1 million visitors in 2013, with the hosting of World Youth Day and the FIFA Confederation Cup as strong drivers behind growth. While the largest source of visitors is from neighbouring Argentina, tourists from Europe and the US are increasing due to promotional work by Brazilian tourism board Embratur.

"The hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 will bring the world's focus to Brazil, increasing international exposure and boosting inbound tourism," concluded Frick.
