Brea Dental Office Begins Using State-of-the-Art Cancer Screening Tool

BREA, CA--(Marketwired - May 31, 2015) - Brea Dental Group, a multi-dentist Brea dental practice, has added a new handheld device that will aid in screening for cancer or irregularities in the mouth.

The tool, known as the VELscope, uses a special light to expose abnormalities in the mouth, lips, cheeks and oral cavity. Dr. John Whitworth of Brea Dental Group said before purchasing the VELscope, he had offered only manual oral cancer screenings during visits.

“It is the most powerful tool available for assisting in the discovery of abnormalities,” he said. “The VELscope exposes irregularities in tissue that we simply cannot detect with the naked eye or a manual examination.”

Dr. Whitworth and the health professionals at Brea Dental Group recommend that patients receive an oral cancer screening during their regular dental checkup.

This year, nearly 50,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pharyngeal or oral cancer, while 8,000 Americans will lose their battle with oral cancer. Oral cancer is treatable if detected early, but the five-year survival rate is only about 50 percent.

Those who use tobacco or alcohol regularly are more likely to be diagnosed with oral cancer, but studies have shown that about 25 percent of Americans diagnosed with oral cancer have no known risks.

Brea Dental Group is one of the few Orange County dental offices offering the VELscope oral cancer screening.

“If caught early, oral cancer is very treatable,” Dr. Whitworth said. “By using the VELscope we can detect even the slightest abnormalities inside your mouth and plan ahead before the problem persists.”

Brea Dental Group offers cosmetic dentistry solutions such as minimally invasive porcelain veneers and prepless veneers. The Brea Dental Group team has training on Lumineers veneers, a type of prepless veneer that can be placed in a single office visit. These prepless veneers are also considerably more cost effective than traditional porcelain veneers.

The Brea Dental Group team is also skilled in placing dental implants for patients with missing teeth. Dental implants function much like natural teeth and give patients an increased chewing ability over removable dentures. Brea Dental Group places single dental implants, mini dental implants and All on 4 dental implants for patients missing entire arches of teeth.

In addition to implants, Brea Dental Group, 503 East Imperial Highway, provides general dentistry services, full mouth reconstruction, orthodontics, cosmetic treatments, periodontal treatments and endodontic services. Individual treatments include no-prep veneers, minimally invasive porcelain veneers, in-office whitening treatment, crowns, bridges and laser gum surgery.

Brea Dental Group offers both braces and Invisalign. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to adjust teeth, making the treatment virtually undetectable. With Invisalign, there are no brackets or wires, and patients are asked to change their aligners -- which resemble a clear mouthguard -- about once every two weeks.

Brea Dental Group is in a stand-alone, state-of-the-art facility with 11 operatories with the latest technology in dentistry. The office includes computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), which assists in mapping out prosthodontic treatment; hard- and soft-tissue lasers; and digital X-rays.

Dr. Whitworth started his own practice in 2003 and has more than 40 years of experience. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Northwestern University in Chicago in 1972. He is certified in laser use by both the Academy of Laser Dentistry and the World Clinical Laser Institute. He also is authorized to administer oral conscious sedation.
