BREAKING NEWS: OFL's Sid Ryan Intervenes to End Worker's Hunger Strike and Secure Reopening of WSIB Case

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 27, 2011) - OFL President Sid Ryan has just concluded a phone conversation with hunger-striker Ippokratis (Jimmy) Velgakis. The 70-year-old injured worker is announcing that he is ending his hunger-strike as a result of Ryan's actions this morning securing agreement from WSIB Chair Steve Mahoney that the WSIB would reopen and review the case. In addition, Mahoney has agreed to personally meet with Velgakis at 2 p.m. today.

The OFL and Velgakis' workers' compensation representative will be in attendance to ensure a successful outcome.

"I appreciate Mr. Mahoney's swift agreement on this matter. The risk to Jimmy's health is just too great. In addition, the case has been erroneously denied by the WSIB Tribunal, especially because critical witness testimony was excluded. Injured workers deserve compensation and help," says Ryan.

Ryan is available for comments both before and after the meeting. Media will also be updated at the conclusion of the meeting.
