BreakingPoint Resiliency Score™ Replaces Vendor Assurances With the Measurable Answers Needed to Harden Cyber Infrastructure

BreakingPoint Resiliency Score Provides an Objective, Repeatable and Scientifically Measured Certification of Manufacturer Performance and Security Claims

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - March 2, 2010) -  BreakingPoint Systems today unveiled a new approach to objectively measure the resiliency of network and security equipment, putting an end to data sheet speculation. The BreakingPoint Resiliency Score™ provides an objective, repeatable and scientifically measured certification of the performance, security and stability of any network or network device. The Resiliency Score methodology was unveiled today on the show floor at RSA Conference (Booth 1356), with vendors receiving an opportunity to calculate their score.

BreakingPoint Resiliency Score Ends Data Sheet Speculation

  • Enterprises, service providers and governments have previously had no viable way to benchmark the overall resiliency of a piece of network equipment.
  • Equipment manufacturers have not been mandated to evaluate the security and performance of their products, thus buyers rely on marketing data sheets for information.
  • Organizations and governments cannot rely on the assurances of equipment manufacturers and are demanding formulaic and deterministic answers to equipment performance and security.
  • The BreakingPoint Resiliency Score is a highly automated, relevant and reproducible scoring mechanism that measures the performance and security of a network or network device under real-world application traffic, real-time live security attacks, heavy user load and other methods.
  • Using the BreakingPoint Resiliency Score, enterprises, service providers and government organizations can end the guesswork of reading through product data sheets and instead use this numerical benchmark to do the following:
    • Assess overall risk and liability of a network and use this information to harden any cyber infrastructure against attack.
    • Hold equipment manufacturers accountable for their claims.
    • Identify weak equipment for replacement.
  • BreakingPoint Resiliency Score is used repeatedly with the most up-to-date protocols and security attacks for a consistent and continual measurement of network and network element resilience.

BreakingPoint CTO Dennis Cox Comments on Resiliency Score
"Certification for performance and security is nothing new; in fact, we have come to expect it for everything from our phones to our automobiles," said Dennis Cox, CTO of BreakingPoint. "Yet network equipment, which supports our businesses and governments, has no standardized certification for performance and security. Instead we rely on statements made in product marketing literature, which are based on best-case scenarios, not real-world truths. Organizations want measurable answers, not assurances, when it comes to cybersecurity. The BreakingPoint Resiliency Score cuts through all the speculation and confusion and uses a scientific methodology that provides a deterministic and repeatable certification of any vendor claim."

Why Resiliency Score Is Critical to Cybersecurity
Cyber attacks have become pandemic, warranting urgent global response. The world has now recognized that public and private cyber infrastructures are completely vulnerable to a growing army of criminals targeting customer data, financial systems and national security. The core reason is that billions of dollars' worth of devices that do not perform as promised are used in critical network infrastructures. This leads to increasingly costly outages, data losses, cyber attacks and other failures. The BreakingPoint Resiliency Score ends the performance and security guessing game by providing a standardized, measurable and vendor-neutral method for evaluating and certifying the resiliency of a network and network devices.

Calculating Resiliency Score
The BreakingPoint Resiliency Score is calculated using the latest information from standard groups such as CERT, IEEE and IETF, as well as real-world traffic mixes from the world's largest service providers. A user simply selects the type of device and the speed at which the device is expected to perform. The BreakingPoint Resiliency Score simulation provides a common network configuration for all devices in order to be fair and balanced for all vendors. The BreakingPoint device then runs a battery of simulations using a blended mix of application traffic and malicious attacks, including obfuscations, along with service discovery and validation of the stability of these services.

The BreakingPoint Resiliency Score is presented as a numeric grade from 1 to 100. Devices may receive no score if they fail to pass traffic at any point or they degrade to a performance level well below that expected. The score takes the guesswork and subjectivity out of validation and allows administrators to quickly understand the degree to which system security has been impacted by both network reconfiguration and newly evolved cyber threats.
