Brennan Hart Wilmette 5-K Fundraiser to Buy 1,000 Thanksgiving Turkeys for Chicago's Needy

WILMETTE, IL--(Marketwire - October 15, 2009) - The Community Church Of Wilmette will sponsor a timed 5K race/walk in Wilmette on October 25 at 8:00 a.m. The race begins at the Church at 1020 Forest Avenue in Wilmette, wends its way through Wilmette's beautiful tree-lined streets, through Gilson Park next to Lake Michigan, and ends up back at the church. All runners will receive a Race T-Shirt. 100% of the entry fees ($25 before the day of the race; $30 on the day of the race) will go to buy turkeys.

With the weakened economy and unemployment at its highest levels in generations, the need is greatly increased. Agencies served by the Run (including The Abraham Lincoln Center, Family Matters, The Good News Kitchen, The Sue Duncan Center, Connections For The Homeless, among others) report a tremendous increase in demand for assistance this year. The Run has set as its goal raising enough money to provide 1,000 turkeys.

Twenty-two years ago, a single individual at the church, Jim Brennan, gave away 62 turkeys purchased from his own funds. Soon the Church got involved and over the next twenty years, more than ten thousand turkeys have been given away to charities around the greater Chicagoland area. When Jim Brennan died, Chip Hart took over leadership of the ministry. When he died suddenly three years ago, the children took up the work of their fathers and the Trot For Turkeys they spearhead is named for these two leaders. This will be the third Trot.

Thirteen dollars will buy a turkey. Donations are gladly accepted. Contact (847) 251-4370 or You can register online either by clicking the turkey icon at or going to
