Brentwood School Debate Team Takes National Championship

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 20, 2011) - On Saturday, April 16th, the Middle Division Debate team from Brentwood School of Los Angeles captured the National Championship at Claremont McKenna College. Hundreds of schools from all over the nation worked diligently all year just to qualify for this tournament. Brentwood School qualified two wonderful teams. Both teams competed successfully against 59 teams from schools in Washington DC, New Orleans, San Francisco, etc. A truly national competition.

In the end, one of the Brentwood School teams finished with an undefeated 6-0 record, including a final, spirited public debate in front of hundreds of raucous audience members. The topic? Free speech should not protect hate speech. They were the only team in the competition to finish without a loss.

In a unanimous 3-0 judges decision, the judges awarded Brentwood School first place overall, catapulting the school's debate program to national recognition for the first time. Additionally, Brentwood School placed four speakers in the top 13 in the country, one of whom won the coveted FIRST place gavel as national champion.

"It was a remarkable end to an incredible debate season for the team," said Coach Todd Ballaban. Over 50 students in Brentwood School's Middle Division competed in debate this year, helping the program continue its growth since its inception five years ago under the leadership of coaches Todd Ballaban and Bob Crocker. Most importantly, the students represented the school with class and strong character, both in victory and defeat.
