Bridge Lane's Eco-Friendly Wines for Earth Day

CUTCHOGUE, NY--(Marketwired - April 16, 2015) - Bridge Lane, a family of hand-crafted wines produced by Lieb Cellars on the North Fork of Long Island, is on a mission to be as "green" as possible. In addition to practicing sustainable farming in their vineyards, Lieb packages their Bridge Lane wines in innovative, eco-friendly formats.

Established in 1992, Lieb added the Bridge Lane series in 2004 to offer a line of fruit-forward, "everyday" wines at wallet-friendly price points. There are 5 Bridge Lane varieties (Chardonnay, White Merlot, White Blend, Rosé and Red Blend) and all 5 are packaged in eco-friendly formats: lightweight 750ml glass bottles under screwcap, 3L boxes and 19.5L plastic kegs made from 100% recycled materials. The box wines are the first of their kind to be produced in Long Island's wine region and hold the equivalent of 4 bottles of wine.

"Switching from wines that come in traditional glass bottles to bag-in-box packaging results in 85% less landfill waste," (source: Food Service Daily News, April 2011). Similarly, keg wines offer a greener alternative to traditional bottles as they hold 26 bottles worth of wine and eliminate all of that glass, caps and cardboard. Lighter packaging also means lower carbon emissions when transporting the wine to retailers and customers.

"At the basic level, we are farmers," said Lieb's general manager and certified sommelier Ami Opisso. "Packaging Bridge Lane in alternative formats not only allows us to cut down on costs and pass those savings on to our customers, it gives us the opportunity to be even more environmentally responsible. We want to do our part to protect our farm and our region."

Lieb is encouraging wine lovers to celebrate Earth Day this year by wine sipping the "green" way with their Bridge Lane box and keg wines. They are currently available for purchase online (, in retail stores throughout NY, MA, CT, RI, NJ, and PA and in Lieb Cellars' tasting rooms located in Cutchogue and Mattituck, Long Island, NY.
