Bridgewater Systems Launches Home Subscriber Server, New Product Entering Carrier Trials in Fall 2005

OTTAWA--(CCNMatthews - Sep 12, 2005) -

Extensive Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) and Subscriber-Centric Policy Management Experience Positions Company to Deliver Key Element of IMS Architecture in 2005

Bridgewater Systems, a leading developer of subscriber-centric policy management software for IP-based services, today launched its new Home Subscriber Server (HSS) solution. The new product will enter trials with two major 3G wireless network operators in fall 2005.

The HSS is a key component of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and the 3GPP2 Multi Media Domain (MMD) standards architecture for advanced IP based services including fixed/mobile IP service convergence.

The HSS provides the master database for a given subscriber containing all subscription-related information. This single repository of subscriber profiles is used to provide authentication and authorization of subscribers accessing IMS / MMD based services and to provide policies to the network for quality of service. The HSS thereby enables rapid service provisioning to reduce operating costs while monetizing the usage of converged IP networks. This element is critical to service providers for deploying rich multimedia applications and enabling simultaneous use of converged voice, video and data services for subscribers.

"Bridgewater Systems is uniquely positioned to deliver a market-leading HSS solution as a natural evolution of our existing Subscriber-Centric Policy Management product portfolio," said Russ Freen, CTO and co-founder of Bridgewater Systems. "Bridgewater has been delivering authentication and authorization components to carriers since 1997. We will continue to track developments in IMS, MMD and other specifications and apply them to a standards-compliant HSS."

HSS functions already are established in three widely-deployed Bridgewater Systems' Subscriber-Centric Policy Management products:

-- The Bridgewater AAA Service Controller, a rapidly deployable, out-of-the-box solution that enables access to services to be controlled across all access types and infrastructures

-- The Bridgewater Application Authorization Server, which provides a centralized subscriber policies and profile management system for applications allowing for significantly reduced application integration and provisioning costs.

-- Session State Register, which delivers session and state information to applications

These products are enabling service providers such as Verizon Wireless to rapidly launch new mobile IP services - such as the Verizon Wireless V-CAST mobile video service. It also provides the benefit of consolidating network infrastructure, applications and subscriber management.

Bridgewater Systems' products accomplish the primary goals of the HSS by consolidating subscriber and service profiles in a central repository, then making that repository available via standardized interfaces to service applications. These applications include IP video as well as operations support applications, such as mediation and billing.

"While the HSS represents a migration from traditional wireless Home Location Register (HLR) products, its importance to the promise of IMS cannot be underestimated," said Peter Jarich, principal analyst, wireless infrastructure for Current Analysis. "Convergence, after all, depends on a unified subscriber database with evolved application authorization, service control and policy management capabilities - all of which rests in the HSS."

Bridgewater Systems is an established leader in the CDMA2000 1x marketplace, supporting the roll-out of more than 26 CDMA2000 1x networks throughout the world, including top-tier carriers such as Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, Bell Mobility and Virgin Mobile. Its technology supports deployments from 5000 to 50 million provisioned subscribers and from 10,000 to more than 1.5 billion transactions per month.
