Bridgewave's Gigabit Wireless Solution Supplied Essential Network Connectivity for the 84th Academy Awards® Ceremony

Highly Reliable Millimeter Wave Gigabit Wireless Solution Delivers Outstanding Performance for Third Year in a Row

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - Feb 28, 2012) - BridgeWave Communications, the leading supplier of millimeter wave 4G backhaul solutions, today announced that its GE80 gigabit wireless solution provided critical network backbone connectivity for the 84th Academy Awards® event at the Hollywood and Highland Center on Sunday, February 26. The wireless GigE network connection allowed seamless, high-speed video file transfers between Chainsaw, a creative editorial and post-production company, and the site of this year's Oscar® telecast.

Location Connect, an on-site network and IT service provider for special events, was tasked with implementing the project. For the third year in a row, they selected BridgeWave's 80 GHz gigabit wireless solution as it best delivered the reliability and high-speed data rates needed to meet the Academy's requirements. BridgeWave's GE80 solution delivered carrier-grade, five-nines availability, resulting in a highly reliable "always-on" gigabit pipe with performance equivalent to fiber, but without the cost and time delays associated with implementing a fiber connection.

With the high-speed gigabit Ethernet connection, edited background cues were sent directly from Chainsaw's edit bays about one mile away, to EVS playback servers at the theater broadcast facility via Chainsaw's Avid Transfer Manager. Live show playback was enhanced by the use of Playback Innovations Pi System, which was responsible for managing audio/video production elements and integration into the Avid-based post-production. The GE80 link also connected the Pi System for both intranet and Internet asset review and approval.

Throughout the two weeks leading up to the broadcast, media files were transmitted effortlessly through BridgeWave's gigabit wireless link. This year, the link also moved Voiceover (V.O.) files, which were recorded at the theatre digitally and forwarded to Chainsaw and other partners as required. This addition was seamless and effortless.

As BridgeWave's GE80 provides full-rate gigabit speeds with standard Ethernet IP interfaces, file transfer times were significantly faster than other wireless solutions, a significant timesaver for transporting full-resolution high-definition (1.5 Gbit/second) audio/video files. With full-rate gigabit capabilities, other Ethernet, other services -- IP intercoms, ftp file transfer, VoIP, system updates, could run simultaneously over the link, with full traffic shaping and no interference.

"BridgeWave has earned our trust for providing highly-reliable, high performance gigabit wireless connectivity solutions for the Academy Awards ceremony," said Alex Pournelle, vice president of business development at Location Connect. "We are pleased to be working with them for the third year in a row."

The link was commissioned in just days, and traffic was running minutes after initial setup, transporting over 500 Gbytes of data in the days leading up to the event. Over 1,900 high-definition video files were transferred for editing, effects and other production purposes. Rapid updates and quick revision cycles during rehearsals and on the day of the awards ceremony were carried out with ease and without any network interruption. The efficiency of BridgeWave's GE80 gigabit wireless link for sending files electronically allowed editors more time to prepare and review changes made on the fly, thus allowing more time for quality control. It also eliminated the need for Chainsaw to have a physical presence at the theatre as well as couriers traversing congested city streets to deliver film to the production trucks.

"Having a gigabit wireless connection between our facility and the broadcast campus improved efficiency in our workflows," said Mike Polito, vice president of Chainsaw. "BridgeWave's network solution allowed our editors to focus on providing content without the concern of delivery."

"The wireless connection allowed us to edit and perfect playback sequences much faster than having an on-site team and eliminated the need for courier service to shuttle film between facilities," said Tad Scripter, chief engineer for the Academy Awards® telecast. "It let us react quickly to last-minute changes as clips are readied for broadcast."

"BridgeWave is honored to have been entrusted for the third year in a row to supply the Academy with reliable, high-speed connectivity for the Oscars® broadcast," said Amir Makleff, president and CEO of BridgeWave. "Our deployment at the Oscars® is another opportunity to show how our gigabit Ethernet wireless links provide highly robust and reliable backhaul connectivity for mission critical applications such as supporting real-time high definition transmissions."
